I can just about afford the Apex number 1 for $150 but for me its a lot of money to spend on a sharpener but It could be the all in one I'm hoping I am totally sharpening impaired about the only thing I can get good results with is a accusharp.

I have only a few knives but sharpening fears are preventing me from getting more, my biggest knife is a BK-9 which is far to big for a lot of guided systems if your a sharpening idiot like I am I have looked into the sharpmaker but with stock stones it is only good for keeping sharp knives not making them that way and a DMT might be too small for my BK-9 without moving the clamp besides knife size my other concern with sharpening is D2 steel would the edge pro sharpen D2 steel easily? I don't need my knives ridiculously floating hair chopping sharp but someplace around the factory edge of a kershaw what I like on a knife, would an Edge Pro Apex 1 take care of all my worries or would I need to buy a more expensive model?

take the plunge. i did and there is NO buyer remorse. i am lightyears from rich, so i realize the price tag on an EP represents a knife not purchased :( however, if you have larger/thicker knives to sharpen, it's freakin awesome.

there's a learning curve (well, for me there was) and you can still make mistakes. i think an accurate statement would be: it REDUCES the human element. you can still tilt the blade mid stroke and foul things up, but (honestly) the EP is probably the smartes purchase i've made all year.

make sure to get the 120/220/320/600/1000 this is what i have and i would like to go finer, but wouldn't like to have ANY LESS than this. i've made knives sharper than the owner wanted them :( with just the 1000 grit. the 120 wears out pretty quick, don't expect it to last too long.

is it worth the 190 i paid for all of it..... well, in the absence of a Chinese knockoff, i'm gonna have to say YES.

I like it as well and have many other types of sharpners. The tip for me is the hardest thing to do correctly. I end up taking too much off one side. I need to stop after a couple of strokes and check the blade.

The EdgePro is the very best hand powered guided system available. It will sharpen all sizes and blade shapes quickly and effectively. I don't know which stones come with the set you've chosen, but you will want stones in these approximate grits sizes to go along with your Apex; 220, 360, 600 grits. Get these stones now. They will make your EdgePro work to its best possible effect. You can add the 120 grit if you plan to do any re-profiling.

Definitely get at least one 120grit stone. I think in the long run you'll be happy you bit the bullet and got the king of guided sharpeners.

I'm probably going to be the only one here to tell you to think it over. The Apex I bought several years ago does not see use because for me I was not easy to use. To hard to hold the blade in one position for to long. I also very well know how it is when money is tight like mine is know.

I'm thinking about getting a Wicked Edge Sharpening system. I will admit I don't like the price of it either but I think it will be easier to use, no big learning curve. Just though I had to offer this advice I wish someone had offered it to me when I bought mine.

Just my spin on the Edge Pro,

Electric - I was in the same place as you. Owned an Edge Pro Apex for almost two years and did not really get the hang of it. You should go to the edge pro website and watch the youtube videos. One of the tips is to relax and just let the blade rest on the on the table of the sharpener. Once I got the hang of now to use it I have sharpended some blades that I was not able to get sharp on any other system.

You'll love the APEX. The learning curve is extremely short, and the results are truly magnificent.:thumbup:

I just got my Apex. I like it, but I'm still in the "learning curve" when it comes to the smaller pocket size carry blades. I will keep practicing on some cheap knives. I'm sure it will become easier to stay consistent in time.

I would advise you to get one. Compared to most other sharpening kits, the positives outweigh the negatives. Especially for blades over 4 inches.

I've had the Apex for a few weeks now and find it to be the finest sharpening system I've ever used. Go for it, you'll love it!
