I'm almost 100% sure that this is a fake but I want to believe

Yes it is a Chinese copy and certainly not a bad one for the price. At some points like the suction base for example it is better than the two flimsy legs and suction cups of the original. Very good value for your money

Whether or not you have moral objections about buying a Chinese copy is of course up to you.

It's been discussed here often.

The consensus is ...
- the stones are crap
- but, if you replace them with EPA stones, it performs very well

I've heard the same thing & looked at it a few times, some reason though I couldn't get myself to buy it instead of the real one. Still debating. I saw somewhere that the maker of the Edge Pro didn't Patent it, and that's why they're allowed to sell the knockoffs on EBay & Amazon. Don't know if that's true or not

it performs vary well, but only with the real EP-stones,as the ones that come with this kit are worthless.

If they don't have one, they could probably get one. All they have to do is document that they had the idea first.

For awhile, I worked in a research department and we were required to carry composition notebooks and document daily everything we did, discussed, doodled, daydreamed - essentially a technical diary - all to support any future patent claim.

Could be they don't consider the knock-off that serious a threat and/or worth the effort.

Same thing happened with the ubiquitous PC. While Apple vigorously defended their patents on the Apple II and Macintosh computers, IBM did not, thank goodness. ;)

The patent expired several years ago. The design is now public domain, much like when any other patents expire, medicine is one example.

The stones aren't crap. There are better stones out there but for the price you can get very sharp edges and they set the edges up well for mirroring if that's what you want. It beats a lansky and lansky's stones.

I think the stones are as good as congress stones. Congress stones wear more slowly but they also cut slower.

I agree and for about $ 10.- you can get 3 same brand (Ruixin) diamond stones at grids 200, 500 and 800 which are pretty good as well.

Sure, if they don't arrive broken, chipped, uneven, ... ;)

I've had 3 sets and none arrived unusable. Two stones, one stone in two different sets, needed some super glue to hold it to their backing. One stone had a hairline crack that didn't affect performance. All arrived flat enough to give consistent edges.

What would be a good set of stones to buy?...
EP stones. ;)

Maybe you can repurpose some of your existing sharpeners? DMT 4" and 6" stones will work, though the 4" stones may require a 'spacer'. Sharpmaker rods have been used as well.

I've used one of those in the past, and actually worked quite well. Are the stones as good as some name brands? No. But the entire package is the price of just one or two stones purchased elsewhere. Definitely worth trying out to see if you even will like the sharpening process. Just pick up a dmt stone for leveling as they wear, as an uneven stone will add frustration to the learning curve.

I'd say you get 80%+ value of the known names, for 10% of the price. So I'd say if interested, try it out and make your early sharpening mistakes on the budget model. If the stones wear out, full replacement sets can be found online for around seven bucks. Then, If the sharpening bug sets in for good, at that time start looking at the higher priced models and specialty stones.

Add: I should add though that I did not buy mine from someone blatantly misusing someone's trademarked names. Pretty sure mine was just called it a knife sharpening system, and possibly used "compare to" terminology. Personally I would not buy from that specific link above that is misrepresenting their product as an Edge Pro Apex. There are plenty of other sellers of the same item that don't crap all over our US laws of representation and trademarks (patent or no patent).

Agreed

I also added a 20x20x10 mm neodymium magnet which helps to keep the knife flat on the table so I can even sharpen it without having to hold it with my hands.

I also use a drill stop collar to help compensating for variances in thickness of the stones and from a 1 meter strip of aluminum I cut several pieces to which I tape various grids of sandpaper or 3M lapping film and a leather strop.

All-in-all for about $ 15.-

I've got one and I'm pretty happy with it. I do have to get some better stones for it tho. That magnet idea is a good one, I'll have to try that :D

I have a stop collar but never felt like I needed it. A magnet is indispensable in keeping the knife secure and stable. I don't have it attached to the base, though. I just put the knife where I want it and the magnet is strong enough to stick to the blade through the plastic. It's actually nice having it mobile. On some knives it's better near the tip, on some it's better right in the middle, on some it's better right on the flat near the handle.

The copies of the epa are all over aliexpress, along with stones and diamond hones. There are also copies of the kme, but fewer and more expensive.

If you buy one of these sharpeners do yourself a favor and pick up a few of the $4 Ruixin Pro diamond stones to go with it. They are are a huge improvement over the included stones and make sharpening even the most wear resistant steel a breeze.

How long have you been using the diamond stones and have you noticed any degradation in their capability?
