My new Edge Pro Apex Kit 3 just arrived! No more bruises from falling against dull knife edges!
I am going to learn how to use this thing properly. The video is for the Pro model (at least the first half of it is, I haven't watched the whole thing yet), but I'm sure most of the techniques apply to both models.
Any advice other than follow the directions?

I have an Edge Apex and I love it. It puts a great straight edge on a blade but if you can find a way to help with a convex edge, I'd be your friend forever. I am about to dig into my Fat GW to clean up the rough factory edge with the Apex since there's no need for convex there. Using the tapes you can polish the edge to the point you can never tell it was sharpened (unless in my case, the edge improves).

are you refering to putting a convex edge on the blade or sharpeing and existing one?
from my experience a convex from an edge pro really isnt possible because it is designed to put straight v grinds on blades. I have used it to eliminate convex grinds on my HRLM and SS4. It took alot of work but the pay off in how they cut now it awesome.

i love my edge pro. it works well even on the big blades. while i love the design i hated the stones they want to keep selling you. i replaced mine with diamond from dmt and it made a great sharpener even better.

There's a video, albeit short, on one of the websites that sell EdgePro that seems to be about 10x better than the Edgepro video. The guy shows that you don't need to stay on that one little section and move your knife like crazy.

could you post the link? Or pm it to me.

Practice on some kitchen knives until you get the hang of it, and then start sharpening your nice knives. Congrats!

Curious if you can post a link to which DMT you got for it? Did you need to modify the clamps that hold the stone at all? I have the Apex and think it's really a great tool. The only thing I don't like is that their extra course stones develop a groove too quick.

Better yet, practice on any Cold Steel knives you have laying around!:D To think there was a time when I thought those were the "end all" of knives, lol.

Ha, thats funny! I wanted a Recon Tanto for so long but couldn't imagine spending that much for a combat knife...

I never did end up buying one, but now own several large Busse's...

...go figure! :confused::confused::confused:

No kidding! lol I've come to realize that I didn't know squat about knives until finding bladeforums. Besides the Busse family of knives, I really like some of the work the custom makers here do as well.:thumbup:

Pygmalion, I can't remember if they covered this on the video or not, but you can also put a micro-bevel on the edge. I did this with a Rat Trap folder that I had. I reprofiled the edge to 15 degrees on each side, then finished it off with a 25 degree micro-bevel. I used the polishing tape to get a mirror finish edge and it lasted quite a while.:thumbup: Here's a good sharpening FAQ that you should check out, http://www.knifeart.com/sharfaqbyjoe.html.
