I was wondering if any of you edge pro apex users could give me the measurements of the stones that the edge pro uses ? I'm gonna get one but I want to get aftermarket stones sold by congress tools.

Thanks all
Niko :)

Get the 1/4" thick ones. They'll last much longer. Oh yes, 1"X6". Get some SiC powder from congresstools too. They don't have the 60 grit(only 80 grit) but it works about the same and it's much cheaper.

Wouldn't the thicker stones mess with the sharpening angle as you would make contact before the at angle was attained?

Ive had an apex for a few years now and honestly I eyeball everything because the angles on the sharpener are just estimates anyways. Even if you set the sharpener to 20 degrees per side you may not actually be sharpening it to that. Different shaped blades with different widths mean you wont always be sharpening at the exact angle unless the further out the edge is from the sharpener the less accurate the degree angles will be. To me the edgepro is suited really well for flat grind kitchen knives. Folders to me are just a pain.

Agreed, I use an angle meter phone app to come close to what I want and after that it's just eyeballing and sharpies.

Not to mention the primary grind will also throw the measurement off also, depending on how you rest the knife on the table.

Just curious, but are the congress tools stones better quality, or is the price better? I am using the EP stones that came with my kit -- I wasn't aware that anyone else made stones for it.

I bought the Apex 4 Kit, which comes with 120, 220, 400, 600, and 1000 stones, along with blanks for the polishing tapes and a set of 2000 and 3000 polishing tapes. I haven't used the 120 grit at all, but have used all of the others. They seem like high quality stones. If you have a lot of recurve blades, you may want to mix and match and get the 1" width stones which are supposed to be better for sharpening recurves than the standard 2".

IMHO, the congress tool stones have the stock stones beat in performance and price and longevity. That's just me though.

I find the 1000 and 1200 grit super soft stones to be much better than the 600 grit moldmaster. I can jump from 400 grit moldmaster to 1000 grit super soft pretty easily and it leaves a better finish without disintegrating like the 600 grit mm.

Oh, and the ruby stones aren't that great IME. They glaze easily and are stubborn about releasing fresh abrasive.
