Anyone have thoughts on quality/performance between the stones that come with the Edge Pro vs. stones from Sharpton or Chosera?

Thanks!

I've been using the EP for quite a few years now, and in my personal experience, the stock Boride stones that come with the unit are very good. You can quite literally get a hair splitting edge with them, and the polishing tapes on glass blanks.

However, the Shapton and Chocera stones are superior by a wide margin. They're much quicker, there's a better selection, they polish better, and of course, they're quite a bit more expensive.

I like to use my Chevrolet vs Cadillac comparison here. The Shaptons and Choceras are the Cadillacs. But the stock EP stones will get the job done.

A person just starting to use the Edge-Pro will be well served by the stones he receives with the unit. After the short learning curve, if the sharpener wishes to advance to a more refined edge, and do so with a bit less effort, then the Japanese stones are a good investment.

Like any other pursuit, learn the basics on basic equipment. After mastering the basics, if one wishes to acquire more sophisticated tooling, he will already be conversant with it's proper useage.

Ben more or less has my feelings on this one more or less summed up. Once you have the basics mastered and are ready to take the next step up, the upgrade stones make the job faster and easier, with a better end product. But that's not to run down the stock Boride stones, they're very good in and of themselves. Off of the 1K EP stone with good technique, you will be holding an edge the quality of which perhaps only 1% of America has ever had the experience of using.

That being said, I have Choseras for my EP, and Shaptons for my WEPS. They ARE as good as they claim to be.

I have a set of the chosera stones ( 3k to 10k) and they work great.... all my EDC blades now have a polished mirror edge that can whittle hair.

Both Ben Dover and Komitadjie know their stuff and are very helpful. :D I especially like Komitadjie's comment that the edge quality the EP can provide is something that maybe only 1% of America has ever had the experience of using. That makes you feel good about the tools we already have in our possession. Just imagine what these other stones are capable of. I am going to order the Chosera stones as well.

Have any of you guys tried the congress tool moldmaster SiC stones? I use the 320, 400, 600 grit moldmasters and I like the results I get, and the SiC doesn't seem to make a big burr. For reprofiling my grit progression is EP 120, MM320, MM400, MM600, EP600, EP1000, and tapes. I find that the moldmasters take of the scratches of the EP120 much faster. I also sometimes stop at the MM400 and this gives a very aggressive edge that with a few strokes on the diamond paste loaded strop is able to whittle hair. The moldmasters aren't expensive too.
