Just bought a used Edge Pro Apex 1 that comes with 180g & 320g stones. What extra grits, if any, will I need to take care of my hunting and EDC knives to keep them razor sharp? Also, is it worth it to buy the instructional DVD, even though this Apex comes with the instruction booklet?

There should be enough information on this forum, that a DVD is not needed, but I watched mine once.
spend the extra money for stones and tape.
I pretty much bought it all, and use the stones, from crosier to finer, new knife I don't skip grades. To touch up I go down one or two grades and back up.

Use a search for Edge-Pro, there should be a lot of information.
Ben Dale the owner of Edge-Pro will answer any questions, you may have.
you should get replies from people on this forum that put instructions into words better than I.

You must mean the 120 grit stone cause i dont think there is a 180 grit. I would just get all the stones.

120 Grit coarse, 220 Grit Medium Fine, 320 Grit Fine, 600 Grit Extra Fine, 1000 Grit Ultra Fine.

You could probably leave out the 1000 grit but personally im very happy with what it did on my blade.

I think the polishing tapes are worth it too. They give a mirror like edge.

There used to be a 180 stone... it was discontinued a few years ago.

blacktails, my suggestion would be to get 1 of each stone. Each has a purpose. If you're knives are in bad shape, get a couple of 120 stones, unless you have another way of doing the major work. The polishing tapes are fun to play with, but not really necessary. The 1000 stone leaves a pretty fine finish.

There's a new series of videos on YouTube from Ben Dale (the EdgePro inventor). Here's a link to the first one... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CY6DJ0PQxyA You should be able to find the others from there.

I agree with everyone so far. Trying to go from 320 to 1000 or anything similar, is too much of a gap. The only stone you would ever have to replace would be the 120 or similar grit - After a lot of use it wears down. You should be fine with the other stones though - buy them now and you won't have to later!

The polish tapes ARE a lot of fun. Good luck with your new edge pro!

I've been in contact with Ben at Edge Pro, and he has been a big help. I'll be getting the 600g & 1000g 1" mounted stones ($14 each), a new set of the suction cups ($1) and guide clips ($1), and maybe the instructional DVD ($10), depending on how good the printed instruction booklet is.

Ben didn't mention the polishing tapes. Are they worth it? Any other purchase tips?

The polishing tapes are fun and give a very polished edge. IMO they are worth it.

I have with my Edge Pro just about every stone he sells plus the polishing tapes.
Honest..
Grab a fine diamond stone which you use with no water.
Then 220, 600, 1000
If you still want the polishing tape, it's up to you.
The 600 stone will already give you a razor sharp edge. To make it finer, finish off by drying the 600 and give it a few finishing strokes with it.
If you want those mirror/glass image edges, you can then keep going with 1000 grid and polishing strips.
