Hello all! I've been thinking about getting an Edge Pro Apex. Ben Dale (the maker) has been very helpful with answering my questions but I'd like to get some feedback from BF member and Apex owners. Thanks in advance.

Do a search, there has been a few threads on the Apex. I find it to be the BEST sharpener out there. It realy works well especially on flat ground blades (which I always found to be a problem with the clamp type sharpeners). Make sure to tape the blade if you do not want any scratches on it.

I use it almost to exclusion of everything else. I sharpen all of my fixed blades, folders, kitchen knives, shop knives etc.
Works great and puts a better edge on almost anything including many fine makers original edges. Deals with really hard steels without much difficulty at all.

I have tried using ezelap diamonds cemented to blanks, and while that works very well, it is a bit of a pain to change the angles when going finer (the Edgepro lets you actually polish your edges up to 4000grit for a mirror finish). I bought some 3M benchstones for my ceramics and chisels and have found these to be wonderful. I just saw in Japan Woodworker catalog that they sell a flexible sheet of these sharpeners in various grits. Has anyone tried cementing these to the Edgepro blanks?

If not I'll buy a couple (bout 40 bucks a sheet but you probably can get multiple hones out of each sheet) and try it and post the results.

Buy the Edgepro you wont be disappointed.

Johan,

I own the Edge Pro "Professional" which is the same machine, only made out of aluminum. I have used all the various sharpeners and I like the Edge Pro better than any of them. Why? It puts the exact angle on the blade that you want and it is very simple to use.
I have seen a couple of posts where guys tape the edge to prevent getting scratches on their blades, however, I don't have that problem at all. I not only sharpen all by blades, but do it commercially and have yet to put one scratch on any blade. Like the one post said, you can sharpen even the hardest steels with ease and get all your blades that "scary" sharp if you want!
Best investment I've made in many years. And did I mention that it is fun to use?

Is the official website the only place to get the Edge Pro Professional? Or does anyone else carry them (perhaps for a little less than $275)?

I believe that the Pro model is only sold direct by Ben. There are dealers for the Apex model, such as K&G, but they all charge full price ($125 for the Apex).

I bought a Pro model a few years ago and had to sell it a while back, but I plan to buy another soon. It was worth $275, especially if you sharpen a lot of large blades.

Could someone who has actually had or seen both the apex and professional models please contrast the two? I know what the web site says, but I am interested in "eye witness account". In other words, is the professional really worth the additional $150? For me that is 1/2 the price of another knife!
Thanks in advance,
Tom

Okay, I've got a buddy who's got an Apex and he's willing to lend it to me for a while. This way I can get a first hand try before I buy. I should have the Apex by the begining of next week and I'll give a review then. Thanks for all the info.
