Got an edge pro off a friend, he lost all the stones so I am starting it from scratch. I have done some research and have read the congress stones are good replacement ones in 1/4" for extra life. I am wondering what grits you would recommend? I am also wondering what is the best place to get edge pro blanks? Or if there is alternative blanks from another company that would work too.

Thanks!

Edgepro's the only place I've seen blanks sold... you could probably call Bob at Oldawan Tools, he's an EP dealer, (and a dealer on the forum). It doesn't show he carries them, but could probably get them for you.

The blanks are also pretty easy to make... get a 1/8 x 1" strip of aluminum at the hardware store, cut into 6 1/4" pieces, sand a 45 deg. bevel on each side, and with a can of 3M77 adhesive spray, make all the blanks you want...

I think it's worth it just to get a set of the EP stones though, they're great stones, and if you're just starting out and have any issues, you won't have to wonder if it's the stone or not. Also, (it's no big deal), but if you do buy thicker stones, you'll have to find an alternate way to measure the angle... the marks on the EP will no longer be correct. As for grits, I'd just get whatever is comparable to what EP carries.

I use the edge pro system with the 5 stones 120,220,400,600 and 1000 and 2 polishing tapes 2000,3000. I find that I use the 400, 600, 1000 stones the most. It seems to me that the 400 cuts the best, almost as good as the 220 stone. I rarely use the 120 stone, and if I really need to re profile a blade I use the 220. Check out the website and they have some beginners package which seem to have the most useful stones. If I were to have 3 I would got with 220,400 and 600. The 600 will give you a smother edge than and factory grind, but be careful, you will start to become obsessed with getting a mirror finish on your blades and will want the 1000 stone and the tapes.

Sorry but I don't have any experience with the congress stones, and the only place that I have seen the aluminum blanks is on the edge pro website.

Get a set of Shapton's from chef knives to go. Easiest, and IMHO most economical in the long run.

If you have tools capable of cutting aluminum at an angle, you can make the blanks. Use aluminum 1 inch wide bar stock from Lowe's. Or you can just call Ben Dale at EdgePro. They're quite economical.
