I picked up a new sharpener the other day. It's an Edge Pro Apex with Chosera waterstones. I think this is my new favorite way to sharpen knives, it works really well. I will still keep my Sharpmaker for touch ups but I think I'm done with freehand. I can get them sharp freehand but they aren't as pretty. I have done 4 knives on it so far but we wont talk about the first one, it didn't turn out very good. Here are the other three.

The Choseras are awesome! I think I'm going to practice on 10 or so more Benchmades/Spydercos before I try her out on my Umnumzaan or custom fixed blades.

Looks great!

I didn't realize the Spyderco Sharpmaker was "freehand", or did I read that wrong?

No, I said I'm probably done with free hand and I'll keep my sharpmaker for touch ups. The sharpmaker is most definitely not freehand sharpening.

The Sharpmaker is freehand to the extent that the knife must be held perpendicular to the ground. If your hand wiggles, so does the edge. The Edge Pro supports both the knife and the stone so there no wiggle.

By that logic then the Edge Pro would be free hand as well. The Sharpmaker holds the stone, leaving the knife to move around. The Edge Pro allows the knife itself to stay still, while the stone (controlled by your hand) is free to move around.

Both the sharpmaker and the EP are "guided systems."

You can just take the sharpmaker stones or whatever other stones, and use them freehand, as I often do. Not sure I like the angle of the sharpmaker and feel I can get more control in my hand. If that's good or bad I don't know. I just seem to get better results without them in the jig.

I saw your pic in the 560/561 thread. I gotta get me an edge pro. Gonna see if i can find one in town this weekend.

Even though the stone on the Edgepro is free to move around, its sharpening angle is kept constant by the guide rod. A close examination of edges produced by both systems has shown me that the E/P yields a more consistent appearance.

Worked up the courage to do the Umnumzaan last night
