Edge Pro clamp

I remember someone mentioning using some sort of C or D clamp that works alright with the Edge Pro Apex. Anyone know about this or use something similar? The person's description of it didn't give me a very good sense of exactly what it was, nor was there a picture or a link. So any of those things would be a total bonus:)!

I'm having ALOT of trouble keeping the blade still on the table. The first two knives I did ending up with horrifcally uneven bevel edges. I know, I know, just keep practising... the more I do it the better I will get. And I fully intend to stick with it, but hopefully the clamp will just help me out with some really tricky blades that have small flat areas, multiple flats, funky bevels, etc. I also know about the fimo/silly putty trick and intend to try it sometime.

I'm also having some issues getting a burr. AUS-8. Magic marker. 120 grit stone. Lots of water. LOTS of time. No burr. I got the edge very sharp, and I used the marker, so I know I was hitting the edge. But no burr. Maybe I'm not using enough pressure.

The belly and tip are also giving me fits. I'm having fun, though.

i got a pro with the clamp it sticks like glue,is the apex moving or are you haveing trouble with the blade moving...

I wasn't aware that the Professional model comes with a clamp. I thought the only difference was the scissors attachment, the adjustable base, and the mechanics of the stone holder.

To answer your question, the Apex unit is not moving at all. I am the one moving the blade around on the blade table. Before I bought it, I thought that the spine of the knife would get to rest flush and tight up against the guide, thus making is easy to maintain a perfectly accurate angle. But that is far from how it actually works. Only on a certain few knives with perfectly parallel edges and spines will there be full and comfortably stable contact with the entire length of the guide.

But with practise, I'm sure I will adjust.

base clamp,i think i understand the knife is moving it took a lot of practice for me,you do it enough and it will open up like a book, some knives work better than others.good luck...oh i have never heard of a clamp someone will chime in..

I just thought of this. Try using some double sided type you just put some on the base and stick the blade on top of it well la! Instant holder.

KMN... I once mentioned using a clamp on my EdgePro. An ordinary shop clamp, the sort that uses a trigger to tighten it up, perhaps working depth 2-3 inches and width about 8 inches, plastic covered jaws. I have a bunch of different sized ones in my tool closet so I don't remember specifically which I might have been using at the time. I know that it wasn't a metal screw-type C-clamp. Like a modern version of the old C-clamp. Does that make any sense? Sliding bar for the moving jaw, then finish tightening with the trigger.

Choco, I just tried this as I thought it might be a good idea. It is... and it isn't.
The first tape I tried had a fairly thick foam and that didn't work well at all. Too much movement. Then I tried with a very thin, much denser foam, and that did work. That one was an industrial strength tape for hanging very heavy objects. I had to 'cut' the blade free, then use lighter fluid to clean off the tape and residue. For really oddball blades, such as a double edged boot knife, this might just be the easiest way to hold it!! Good thinking, Choco!

the problem is you have to move the blade laterally as you sharpen different places on the overall edge and you need to continually turn the knife over to remove the burr (if you are able to achieve one ;)).

i guess it might work, ill give it a try next time.

I thought of that earlier myself. Great minds think alike.;)

That's right, it was you who mentioned it. Thanks for the description. I'll hit the Home Depot after work tomorrow to check them out.

Karl,

Have you called Ben, and explained your dilemna?

He is remarkably patient, and very willing to help.

I went by his shop once, and he spent an hour with me, helping me out.

Also, if you like, PM me, and maybe I can help.

Best,
Marion
