Why does Edge Pro use a different grit numbers?

For example;

"Edge Pro 1000 Grit Ultra-Fine Water Stone" information states, "This stone is a little finer than a Japanese 8000 grit water stone."

Or,

"
Edge Pro 2000 Grit Polish Tape" says, "This tape is the same as a 20,000 grit Japanese water stone or 9 micron."

What's the difference? Why can't they just use the same grit system?

Also, does this mean that the Edge Pro 1000 grit Water Stone can be used to bring a mirror polish?

Whatever system EP uses for grading their stones is far different from JIS or ANSI.

The EP stones are excellent, but slow. The person who sharpens his pocket knife weekly will never need anything else.

When I started out with the EP Apex, I was very well pleased with my edges after using the pink polishing tapes.:thumbup:

As I became more familiar with the system, and learned that there was a better edge possible, I slowly switched to Shapton Stones and leather strops loaded with CBN or Poly-diamond. About that same time, I decided that my son really needed an EP APEX so I gave it to him and bought an EP PRO!:D

And to answer your question, yes you can get a very shiny edge from the EP 1000 and the Teal tape. Very shiny indeed.

The factory stones grating system seems kinda flakey imo. Ive seen at least 3 different iterations of it over the past few years.

9u is equal to something slightly coarser than an 2k stone fwiw. Personally i never cared for the factory stones (kinda slow , short lived , load quckly) nor the tapes (poor value , gimmicky , short lived). With all that being said its a well proven system that can make some.well polished edges. But i dont think the performanmce is in line with a true 20 or 30k edge.
