Hey guys,

I wanna know what's the best sharpening system. I looked at the edge pro which I'm learning towards to, but not a lot of people discusses the adjustable base and how to adjust it to your blades width.

For example I have a 17 inch overall knife that's at least an inch and a half in blade width. To me it seems like a hassle to predict if I'm sharpening the angle or not. Also if there's not a sharpie around to mark the edge then I'm screwed.

The KME looks like the Lansky but improved also I'm not sure it'll do the job on large blades (Ex: Mtech Raptor 18 inches overall 2 inch blade width) not to sure it's idiot proof either.

Please no wicked edge products. I won't spend more than 300$ on those things.

If you make a search you can find a lot of topics about this already.

KME is a clamped system that is easy to use. The edge pro is not clamped so you have to be ambidextrous and or learn to be with practice.

If your considering the edge pro I'd recommend the hapstone. Iirc V6. Can have a addon clamp system if you wanted. But v7 doesn't have that capability. In any case the hapstone has alot more stone choices than most systems out. It's made of better materials etc.

I recently went through the same thing you did, and settled on the Edge Pro Apex. While I still have a lot to learn, I am thrilled with my decision overall. I've had it for about a month and already produced some really nice edges. Some of my results aren't the prettiest, but even the uglier edges are crazy sharp. The largest and broadest blade I have done with the EPA is an Esee 6, and I had no problems at all. Really an amazing system, and there's some really good info on this site and YouTube to speed up the learning curve.

I studied sharpeners for months, then decided on the TSPROF K-02 pro kit. I have had it around six months and have zero regrets. This thing is great. It can take nearly any stone type/size, plus use the edge pro type aluminum backed stones too. There is a usa dealer now for these too, I had to order from Russia and wait a while to get it. I love it! Give the K-02 or K-03 a look before you drop that kind of cash.

Hey guys,

Sharpening stones, and investing a few weeks to learn freehand sharpening. I studied sharpeners for months too and went this route. What I'd do if I were you.

Get the following which are listed on this site: https://www.sharpeningsupplies.com/DMT-8-Dia-Sharp-Diamond-Stone-P7C24.aspx
This is a solid set that will let you do everything you need, and a good foundation that you can add to later if you want to get fancy (higher grits for polishing things, lower grits for reprofiling entire blades, etc).

ETA: Versus the above, if you want to start "minimalist", you can get a single stone that will do virtually everything you need for basic sharpening (it won't do major blade profiling, and it won't do high-grit polishing). Here's what I'd get for that.
  • Baryonyx Arctic Fox. It will kinda blow your mind how much you can do with this one stone. However if you have a lot of blades with super-hard modern steels, like M390, this stone is not optimal for those.
  • A stone holder. There's a few out there sub $20, but we just had a thread about this. I'd get the Suehiro at around $35.
