I can't even express how nice a system the Edge Pro is. Even after just two knives, my edges are far sharper than they ever were on my old Sharpmaker. It'd be difficult to be any more pleased with this purchase. Far as I'm concerned, it's the best knife related one I've made to date. And the learning curve? What learning curve? It took a lot longer to get used to my Sharpmaker. This thing is so easy a caveman could do it.

Current stone set:

- Shapton Glass 500
- Shapton Glass 1,000
- Shapton Glass 4,000

What others would be worth investing in to round out my stone set? Perhaps something like one of the Shapton Glass 220 and 8k stones to finish rounding it out?

Atoma 140
Nubatama 150
Glass 2k
Glass 8k
2x Nanocloth Strops
Either Boron Carbide or Cubic Boron Nitride stropping compounds, depends on what kind of steels you deal with. Simple steels B4C (Boron Carbide) , High Hardness / Vanadium steels CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) in 1u and 0.5u respectively.

I go

140 Atoma
400 Atoma
Shapton Pro:
325
1000
2000
5000
8000
.5 micron on kangaroo

No way will I spend the $$ on a higher grit stone

Hell no. It's for horsing steel away rough & fast for reprofiling. I have a diamond plate for flattening, though the 325 Pro is the only one that has shown much of a propensity to dish out.
Just got the 400 Atoma today and no time to play with it yet. I hope it will allow the 325 to get a bit dusty.

I assume that the 140 Atoma is for keeping the stones themselves flat?

I see. Next up on my list is for sure a diamond plate of some kind. Don't have anything to flatten the stones when they need it. Maybe something like the DMT Dia-Sharp Extra Course diamond plate?

I started with freehand so I just stayed with freehand so I could just continue adding stones to my set. If I get a campus job in college though and save enough funds I'll probably consider getting and EP. Not anytime soon though.

Hello, Mr Sadden, I noticed in your recommended stone progression you went from 2000 to 8000. Is that not a fairly large jump? I am not questioning your knowledge just trying to get it straight in my noggin.

Indeed. That is in addition to the three stones the OP says he has. :)
