Edge Pro Question...

I just had a thought...

I am planning to buy an Edge Pro Apex. I don't have it yet, so I don't know if this would work or not.

Would it be possible to use the 'Tape Blank' with different grits of PSA-backed Silicon Carbide sandpaper like these cut to size and used in the same way as the polishing tape?

It seems like a great solution which would avoid worrying about your stones 'dishing' and having to flatten them. It would be much cheaper than buying all the stones and would give you a much wider array of available grits. Maybe I can buy the Apex without ANY stones and only use different grit papers?

Am I missing something here?

Thanks,

-John

Sounds doable, but you would have to make some type of block that would hold the paper/tape and have a protuding V groove on each end to fit the clamps.

Isn't that what the 'Tape Blank' is?
(an honest question, not a sarcastic rhetorical one, I don't know the answer because I've never seen one in person)

Thanks,

-John

It should work, but you'll have to be careful not to cut the sandpaper and it probably will wear out very fast (1 minute give or take). That's just my guess on the wear rate, based on other sandpaper sharpening I've done. It would be interesting to see what type of results you get, be sure to let us know how it works if you give it a shot.

It comes with some basic stones, so you've got nothing stopping you from doing some testing with either alternative.

I have experimented in what you suggest, but only used grit sizes finer than Ben Dale sells.

You will find the hones that come with the Edge Pro do their work perfectly and there is not much point in using PSA papers as a substitute for the cutting hones.

Now if we talk about the finner grits , these can be used to good advantage to 'polish' and Ben I believe only sells one size ( 2000 )
if memory serves.

There is a definite improvement in polish to be able to go up as high as about 5000.

Also with me , anything above about 2000 does not seem to form a burr
and this can sometimes be an advantage.

What Nosmo said.

If you do try using sandpaper, especially lower grits where you might be applying pressure, you run the risk of hitting the edge, cutting right through the sandpaper and snagging the blank. This might put a *ding* in it and ruin th perfectly smooth surface so important for use with the polishing tapes.
