I been trying to sharpen a knife ,,, ats-34 steel .. It seem pretty sharp .. its like almost shaving sharp .. I mean if i run the blade down my arm it might cut 3 or 4 hairs .. This is the first time i used this knife with the edge pro ..
should I expect to get it shaving sharp ,,or use it like it is and try the next sharpening to get it shaving sharpe ?
thanks

If the bevel is even and you used the EdgePro it should take hairs off the arm pretty good. Mine do. I would suggest if it doesn't with your blade that maybe you need to ligthen up the pressure toward the end of your sharpening. Just the weight of the arm itself and knock off any burr. Then as a final finish I always use the back cardboard off a legal pad and strop the edge in slow controlled trailing strokes pushing tip to back as you strop back four or five times on each side. It brings the edge right up to a nice bite that slices very well and shaves hairs by knocking them off above the arm.

i will give it a try ... would a regular pants belt work instead of the cardboard ?

I suspect you are not quite at the edge yet. It is not time to strop until you can flip flop the burr back and forth with one swipe.

Hey Kennieyk....

There's no reason you shouldn't be able to get the knife shaving sharp right off the Edge Pro, without stropping. I don't know how much experience you have with the Edge Pro... kinda hard to diagnose. Maybe just slow down, make sure you're holding the knife steady, removing the burr, etc. Even knives I sharpen at a fairly high angle will come off shaving sharp. What stones do you have? Tapes? Sometimes the tapes will 'dull' the edge slightly if you're not careful with them.

I have the 5 stones that came with it .. got it like 2 years ago .. just now breaking it back out .. I been using the lansky mostly .. but i lost the darn clamp ... And i paid so much for the edge pro i figure i should use it ! I am still learning .. thanks

If you're sure you're reaching the edge, like Nosmo suggests.... I suggest spend a bit more time with the 600 stone. Maybe raise the angle slightly, and make a few very light strokes, alternating sides each time, to insure the burr is gone, create a slight 'microbevel' and you have a nice smooth edge.

i think i just need to work the edge down a little more .. the front edge near the point shaves hair good now ! if yu use the 600 and dont get the shaving edge ,, should i go back to say the 180 ? or can i get it shaving sharp with 180 then go to the 600?

You should know if you're reaching the edge before you move to the next stone... either by raising a burr, or looking under magnification (or at least a very good light). If you don't think you reached the edge, then you may have to back up a stone or two... depending on how much metal you need to remove to reach the edge. (Hope that makes sense).

If you're at the edge, then you should just be able to finish it up with the 600 stone. I wouldn't think you'd need to go back to the 180. If nothing else, try marking the edge with a "Sharpie"... make a pass with the 600 (dry) and see where you remove the mark at.
