Edge pro scissor trick!

Okay, I just learned this and the credit... I'm giving it to Lou, where he got it, it doesn't matter, he said it here and in my time browsing... I haven't seen anyone else post it. Turns out Ben Dale (Edge Pro) came up with this.

Skimo no clamp is necessary. Simply attach the scissors with the vicegrip to the edge of the table that is closest to you when normally using it. The flat part of the scissors blade, the part that rubs against the other blade, goes against the blade table on the end of it. For right handed scissors, the finger loop will be on your right.

If you can't get enough elevation of the pivot shaft to get the right angle − tape a toothpick or a bit of wire coat hanger to the scissors blade to angle the bottom of it away from the table.

Lou

I'll be taking pics tonight to show you guys and gals how I did it, exactly how easy it is and why everyone and their brother with an Apex should know this "trick".

Replies to this thread should include useful information or ooohs! and aaaahs! ;)

I had to take these ones apart because they wouldn't open wide enough.

I taped two sections of Popsicle sticks together and taped it directly under the sharpening table so the vice grips would dig into them and not the wood.

Just used the sharpie trick and went to work!

Push cuts paper like a dream, not even little frayed pieces of paper on the cut, sharpest scissors I've ever handled... cut the sponge I was wiping them with!

This concludes the coolest thing I've learned on BF this year... that's Edge Pro related.

Let's see the WEPS do THIS!

thanks for posting! i actually went and got the scissor mod, but that's great for the average home sharpener! and WEPS will have an attachment by the end of the year for this and to be able to do serrations according to clay. thanks dude!

Quite welcome, I feel happy that at least one other person has learned about this and even happier that for once I could show something useful here.

I wish I had gotten macro before and after shots of the blades, the difference is really amazing.

This was just a case of "right time − right place." I was talking to Ben Dale, inventor of the Edge Pro, on the phone a few days ago and he described this method to me. A couple of days later Skimo mentioned, in another thread, that the scissors attachment for the Pro model doesn’t work on the Apex model. I described this method to him and, as we can see, he tried it out. Gotta give credit where credit is due.

Good pix Skimo, much better than my description of this.

I'll start another thread with some other tips that Ben gave me that helped with the Edge Pro so as not to dilute Skimo's thread any more than I already have.

Take care, Lou

Sounds great, the only thing Ben and I ever talk about is grits the WEPS and imitations, I'll update my first post with this.

This is awesome. Thanks for sharing the scissor trick.

You guys are welcome... the thought has occurred to me that something similar may be possible with lawnmower blades. Sharpening is a sickness and the only cure is a mirror finished blade.

The first and only pair of scissors I have sharpened was with my diamond card I keep in my pocket but I have to try this. Thanks for posting.

Why do none of these photos show up? Could someone please post them again?
Because several months ago, Photobucket stopped allowing their free accounts to link from forums, and disabled all existing links. This is a problem all across internet forums with links to photobucket, not just here.

Unless someone saved a copy of this thread back when the photobucket images were displayed, or the original poster wants to post them again via some other photo sharing service, you're out of luck.

Quote the OP (Skimo) in a reply to this thread, and if Skimo has notifications enabled and still has the photos, maybe Skimo can re-post them.

I was afraid this would be the answer. Hopefully, somebody has the pictures or can interpret the concept to recreate them.

I don't mean to send you on a wild goose chase, but maybe if you go to google images, type in edge pro apex scissors
and maybe, somewhere in that trove of photos, there will be a pic of sharpening scissors without the actual scissor attachment. Or maybe try the same on youtube?

If you look at the scissor attachment EP now sells, it basically "recreates" what is described in this post. Prior to the attachment, he was just clamping the scissors directly to the EP with a vice grip.

If the angle couldn't be reached, then the toothpick would just angle the scissors out slightly to compensate.

If you have a pair of scissors and an EP... hold it against the end like you see in the scissor attachment... and I'll bet it will make sense.
