Hi, Bladeforum..I'm a owner of a Edge Pro Sharpening System as the title entailed ..but I currently am at a loss as how to clean my stones ..when I was messing around with the Spyderco Sharpmaker all I did was take a toothbrush with some toothpaste and the rods looked brand new, but sadly this isn't the case with the Edge Pro stones..so..can anyone shed some light on how they get theirs clean? Much appreciated thanks !

I though this was solely for "re-leveling your stones once you get a "worn" spot in the middle ? It cleans them as well?

This link is about a large bench stone but applies equally to the Edge Pro stones (which I have and use (and really like)).

Hell yah man, really appreciate the awesome thread. It's a shame my M390 PM came with such a inconsistent factory edge ...I had to spend an hour on it just to re profile my damn edge that was anywhere from 13 (near ricasso) to 18 degrees (near the tip)..talk about a pain...

Hi,
yup, lapping is cleaning the hard way :)

A local equivalent stone leveling kit might be
hardware store 12-24 inch square tile for $1-2
and from harborfreight $14 in sic powder (Rock Polishing Abrasives)

also, I could have sworn I saw burrfection/ryky tran on youtube use a rust eraser on his waterstones ... but I was sleepy :)

A "rust eraser" my god ..Mr.Clean has got nothing on that..lol. But thank you for the budget alternative. Sadly I think I like my Edge Pro so much that I'll support the brand and probably just purchase their leveling kit. What's 50 bucks when I've already spent 250 on the kit lol.

Well, $50 is AT LEAST one, maybe two more stones! I use a fire brick to flatten all my stones. It was $3.50. Sometime I use sandpaper on a flat surface.

I'm a big EP fan, and have used the leveling kit... but I found the best thing to keep the stones flat and 'refreshed', is a 2"x6" coarse DMT DiaSharp stone. (As an added bonus, you can clamp it in the EP and use it for regrinds or repair jobs). Easy to keep with the kit too.

Leveling kit works fine... but is a bit messy, and makes flattening a separate task... you have to set it up, and works best if you do all the stones at once. With the DMT, I could touch up a stone in just a few seconds... usually just walked over to the sink and did it under the tap. Quick and easy.

THAT'S BRILLIANT !
I haven't pulled the trigger on diamond plates for my Edge Pro yet and this is a big argument to do just that.

THANK YOU !

cbwx34,

Could you post a part number or link/photo.

The ones I am seeing look too thick to fit in the EP.

Awesome! I'll definitely look into that..I was honest going to just cut my own piece of 1/4" glass and buy the silicone carbide myself but if I can get away with just a DMT stone then it sounds like that's the way to sail..

A DMT D6C...

... (any of the 2x6 DiaSharps will work). They're the same thickness as a standard EP stone. (Ignore the places that mount them on a piece of aluminum... not needed).

Bar Keepers friend works for me. It's like a powder/abrasive cleaner you can get at your local store(walmart, grocery store). Use that with a sponge you don't care about and mine come out pretty clean.

That's what I use.
After every use of my Edge Pro stones I sprinkle a little BKF on a 2x6 fine/ultrafine Diasharp add a little water and lap the stones in the deep sink till all discoloration is removed.
I really saves time doing it before there's cupping in your stones. It takes forever to lap all of your heavily cupped stones flat at the same time rather than the 10 seconds each after a sharpening session.
I learned that the hard way...

That's a damn good idea..my wife uses that stuff all the time to clean her matte finish pots and pans, now I can kill two birds with one stone and justify the purchase ..lol. Still seems like you can only "clean" the Edge Pro stones so many time before you need to "re-level" though. Nice quick maintenance tip though, much appreciated.
