Edge pro sharpening system and BIG khukris

Yuck...the milder steel they use needs all of the reinforcing support the edge can get from the carbides in the metal.

Khukuri call for convex edges...sandpaper around a piece of wood faced with leather.

Dan posted something about it in the Cantina...

It can work, but it's extremely difficult and not very effective. As Nasty noted, you're not going to get the best type of edge for the use these blades are put to. A belt sander works much much better.

I'm sold on the convex edge. Once I profile the blade, it's easy to keep it sharp. Love my Harbor Freight 1" belt grinder. But I was using a 4" hand belt sander with a worn out fine grade belt till I got the 1 incher. For sharpening in the field, I keep a Altoids tin with a glued fitted mouse pad on back, storing various grits in the tin.

When I got my first khuks I got all sort of esoteric sharpening systems and they did not seem to work. Finally I wised up and did what Dan and Yvsa suggested in the first place and went to the sandpaper and strop or mouse pad method.

Once you get the hang of it you'll use it for all your blades:thumbup:

One o' these days, I'll get some extra mouse pads and the right kind o' sandpaper and give convexing a try.

If you ever see some of the blades I ever *tried* to put a flat grind on, you'd understand why I was so quick to adopt the convex.

Convex I can do passingly well.

Yes. I have the Apex Edge Pro. It does a very good job. The only down side I have encountered using it on kuks is it wears out sharpening stones.

It is the best I've used on all other knives.
