i replaced my 120 grit stone, purchased directly from edge pro.

but it is nowhere near as abrasive as the original one.

it is blue and correctly marked, but feels and sharpens like the 320 grit stone. did i get a lemon?

You could send an e-mail to Ben about that, but perhaps it just needs to be broken in? If the stone is blue and looks like silicon carbide, there's no reason why it should be as fine a grit as the 320 aluminum oxide stone. Either you could be imagining it or you have a very wear resistant knife.

Blue? All my 120 grit EdgePro stones are white! I guess I really do have an antique sharpening system!

I would describe it as more of a "gray". My 220 grit stone is white(turning black now).

I noticed the same thing a while back, and sent Ben (from EP) this pic. Is this what you're seeing?

According to Ben, there's no difference other than the color. I, like you, thought it cut a bit smoother though.

This is where using the SiC powder on glass to lap them really pays off. It refreshes all the stones and gets them cutting at their corresponding grit, especially the coarse ones. It got this stone cutting like a 120 stone again. Whether you get the kit from EP or put one together yourself, it's well worth it.

All new stones should be lapped. Both SiC and AO will grind differently depending on how they are cut at the factory. Case in point... if you take a coarse stone and lap it on a fine diamond stone. The coarse stone will cut like the fine diamond stone until you wear through the top layer of the coarse stone. Therefore, just lap with something as coarse or coarser than the 120.

That top one really IS gray!! When I say mine are white, I'm talking more like cream color rather than gray. It they cut like they should!!

If it says 120 on the stone, it is 120. Lapping on the grit will make it work properly. Even lapping it on a XXC DMT will not get it to cut as well as the grit, but using sand on concrete seems to make it cut as well as the grit does.

I just got my edge pro and the 120 grit stone looks like the blue one in cbxw34 pics. It does seem to cut less aggressively than the 220. Should I try lapping it?
