I think I would like to get a diamond stone for my EP but don't know which one to get. They offer a fine and super fine. What would that equate to?? I can get the 1000 grit stone, would the diamonds be even finer??

Thanks,

Paul B12

Paul,Welcome. The X fine diamond would be the same fineness as the grit you state.DM

I have the edgepro 800 grit stone. I also have a well used DMT 1200 grit. No question about it, the edgepro 800 grit stone is WAY finer than the DMT. If I had to give the 800 stone an equivalent DMT grit, it would be over 3000.

Yoda,I have noticed this as well w/ the DMT.Its just not as fine as they state.Could it be in the different way they figure their grits or "mesh" ?DM

They are accurate, but the "grit" scale differs by country and stone type. DMT grits compare accurately to other diamond hone brands. It's best to only use grit ratings to compare stones in the same "class" (ex: diamond hones, japanese waterstones, american oilstones). I'm not sure what scale edgepro uses, but it's not the japanese waterstone scale that's for sure.

Yoda,Thanks. There are two different diamonds they use in the making of those stones would that shed some light on this subject? One is poly crystalline and the other is monocrystalline which DMT uses and they'er larger. I've noticed deep scratches in my blades after using a EZ Lap diamond stone marked fine 600 grit that are hard to remove.Whereas when using a fine Norton India oil stone around 450 grit does not leave such marks, lending some credence to what your saying.DM

I have been using diamond stones on my ep for a couple of years now. I have a diasharp course, fine and extra fine. I really only use the course and extra fine. I dont have any use for the middle grits. If i need to remove some steel the course works well and the extra fine grit works that burr right off. for routine sharpening I normally just use a loaded strop but if it needs just a bit more the extra fine works great. imo its not worth the extra money and time changing stones to have more than these two. If you do make the switch to a nice diamond stone on your ep you wont look back. The standard stones suck.

What diamond stones are you using???

I use the diasharp, course and extra fine. They are appx. 2"x6". I bought them appx. 6 yrs ago at The Smokey Mtn. Knife Works and they dont really show any wear. I think I paid appx. $25 apiece. I bought three but would only buy the two I just mentioned if i had to do it again.

Yeah. I have noticed this too. The EdgePro stones don't seem to correspond to either the JIS or ANSI. They seem to be on a scale of their own. They are much finer then rated. The EP 800# is, like Yoda said, somewhere around 3k or 4k on the JIS scale and around 1200# to 1500# compared to sandpaper on the American or ANSI scale. I like them very much though. I am not just worried about making and removing a burr as fast as possible, but also removing scratches while moving up the progression. If you just make a burr and remove it with two diamond stones I bet you don't get to a mirror edge although you could be moving on into other stones, tapes, or strops.

What base do you use? I'm having a hard time finding one. :grumpy:

I picked up some cheap thin metal/scrap from somewhere with similar thickness to the edgepro stone metal backing but it had to be a bit longer. I ground a fast and nasty angle to also match the ep. stone/metal and then epoxied my diamond stones to it.

Ok, J D, I reread your posts and I got it now. Somehow, I missed that you were using them on the EP. I thought you were saying you liked using the DMT's free hand instead of the EP.

Pita Bread, I gave you bad advice. Those holders I gave you were for holding the 6" stones for free hand sharpening (and would work for that) so you probably thought I was crazy if you wanted to use them on the EP. You can also buy the backing plates from EP for $7 ea.

J D, Sounds nice. Especialy for replacing the 120# EP stone which wears and dishes quite fast. I do like the finer stones though. I imagine you end up with a little toothy edge from the DMT extra fine? How does that compare to the EP 800# or 1000#. Did the DMT stones + metal backing come out thicker then the EP ones? I guess you don't care if you are not using any of the EP stones or tapes and have to match angles, but I am curious because I might want to use the finer stones and tapes afterword and would have to match angles with the DMT's.

The DMT's are quite a bit wider too at 2.0"? How does that work / feel?
