Does anybody make sharpening stones that will fit the Edge Pro Apex that dont require water? (Example: Diamond, Aluminum Oxide, Natural Arkansas etc.)

Say what? I'm pretty sure all of those require one form of lubrication or another.

It's either that or replace the stones after every 5 knives.

You can use dmt stones without water. The only stones that I know of that have to have water is the Japenese Water Stones--which is basically what the Edge Pro stones are.

DMT stones you don't need water. Although it probably does build up a little and a quick wash or wipe down is probably best.

CongressTools.com has a variety of stones including oilstones that will fit (although their site is down right now). You'll have to buy or make your own holder and mount them. I haven't used them so don't know how they perform.

BTW, I saw your other post about the "mess"... if you mount the EdgePro in a pyrex baking dish... it'll catch any runoff and makes cleanup a breeze.

Oh yeah, EdgePro's "stone flattening kit" is also designed to mount the Apex on and catch the runoff.

I had not thought about using a dish. That sounds like a good idea.

I still wonder how consistent you can be when sharpening curved blades on the Apex. Unless you can duplicate your same movements every time you move the knife and move the stone across, wont the angles vary?

I made my own stone blanks out of aluminum stock and affixed DMT 4" x 7/8" x 3/16" Diasharp stones to them. DMT says you don't need to use water with them but I feel they cut much better with water. It's nice not having to worry about dishing on the stones with them.

It's either that or wear them out and clog them up so you would be cleaning them ever few mins.

Same with oil stones.

Razor Edge makes stones that don't require water or oil and they don't clog up or wear out fast. The course stone occasionally requires a few "slaps" to clear it up--real easy to do. Too bad they don't make them to fit the Edge Pro!

Do you guys just wet the stones down before you use them or do you submerge the Edge Pro stones in water for a certain period of time before using them?

I like to soak my EP stones for 5-10 minutes before use.

I use the diamond stones with just a few drops of water, and wash off the swarf frequently.

The diamond plates work best with some lubrication (water is fine). This extends the life of the plate as otherwise the 'debris' - either from stone flattening or knife sharpening gets impacted between the diamonds and erodes the nickel matrix that the diamonds are embedded in more quickly causing premature fallout of the diamonds. If you get a lot of stone 'stuck in the plate, use a nail brush or surgical scrub brush to dislodge the stone swarf buildup.

The Pyrex baking dish is a good approach or simply using the EP over a sink with a bridge.
