So I was thinking about getting some freehand stones because I'm pretty good at keeping a consistent angle and don't have the money for something like an Edge Pro Apex. I like there stones because they're only like 8.00$ each and I was wondering if they are high quality and if you recommend them. I was going to buy the 400, 600, and 1000 grit stones. For those stones is there any specific procedure (like water or something.)

You mean you want to freehand on edge pro stones? Those stones are pretty small and thin. You'd have to put something under them for extra height + something to prevent them from sliding around. The standard stones are water stones, so you have to soak them and add more water from time to time when sharpening. I haven't tried free handing on those stones. Only on an edge pro strop. Once handheld and once placed on top of a full sized strop, but with the water stones that would be too messy I imagine.

I tried freehanding on my edge pro stones today. Worked pretty well. I tried fixing my old crkt kiss, which I kind of ruined in my earlier sharpening attempts. It's a small knife, so it worked well with the small stones. I just put a paper towel on a cutting board and put the wet stone on top. It didnt slide around. Reprofiled (I had rounded it off too much on ceramics) on the 320 stone. Was easier than I expected. This was my first time freehanding on stones (except an attempt to use the rods from the sharpmaker). The blade was (and still is :)) a chisel ground tanto. The resulting edge is not perfectly even, but not bad at all. Got it really sharp too, but I finished on a compound loaded strop after going through 320-600-1000.

I've noticed something good about the edge pro: I'm willing to experiment more with sharpening, since I'm confident that I can repair the edge on the edge pro if I mess up.

Now I want big water stones :)
