Hey guys,

I just got an edge pro apex and its working great but I cant seem to get the tips (and a small amount from the tip) sharp. Should I bring the stone to the tip and not move the knife or should i rotate the knife and bring the edge closer to the stone. any help would be ........ helpful!

I sharpen a couple of knives up to the very tip with an Edge Pro. I rotate the blade till I can get to it conveniently. Making sure it's in a position that I can repeat is harder.

As long as your blade is flat, you should have no problem. I rotate the blade to get to it more easily. I have not seen any problems doing this. Don't "overdo" the rotation. If you watch the EdgePro video, "he" rotates (or at least moves the blade sideways), particularly for blades longer than 6".

I know it's a lot of work, but I re-profile edges (the ones that need it) from mid-belly to tip on a 200-grit water stone before I put them on the EPA. Once that's done, the EPA does it's job perfectly. And when I say "the ones that need it," I mean that some edges will have a shallower edge angle at the tang, but the angle gradually deepens from belly to tip. Since the EPA is a "consistent-angle" sharpener, the edge angle needs to be consistent to begin with for the EPA to perform as intended.

As an example, you can see the edge I put on this GEC #42 just a few days ago using this technique. It came with a VERY deep factory edge angle - it was so deep at the tip that it was literally rounded off. I really laid it down on the water stone to remove enough metal so that the EPA would do it's job. Once on the EPA, I set it at the top of the blue marker and started with the 220 stone (again, wetted), then proceeded to the 400 and 600 grits. Now it's shaving sharp from tang to tip!
