Although I discovered this forum quite some time ago, I just finally got my computer/email problems fixed so now I am able to post. I am utterly amaized and a little overwelmed at the level of info available at this superb website.

My question is, based on anyones first hand experience of actual use, which is the better all around sharpening system the one made by EdgePro, or by Razors Edge? Price is not a factor. To my knowledge no store in my area carries eithor for me to give a first hand once over, so I would like as much feed back as I can get before I spend close to or inexcess of $100 for a sharpening system.

After looking both over as well as doing so over the web allows, the Razors Edge strikes me as having one possible advantage, and if true its a big one. With the Razors dge system it would seem that I can use their angle jig on my knives to sharpen them on stones (like a fine india) other than the ones thay provide.

Any and all facts and or thoughts on this would be a great help to me.

Thanks, ART.

ART,
I have both & I just don't use the Razor's Edge system since I got the Edgepro. Got the Razor's Edge system first, darn it.

The biggest problem I had is that it is very hard to get the blade clamped EXACTLY centered in the jig, & this makes for uneven grinds on the right & left sides of the blade.

The other problems are that you tend to grind down the jig as well as the blade, as you hone the knife.
Unless you re-clamp the blade in EXACTLY the same place the next time you sharpen, you'll change the bevel also.

It's true that you can use whatever stones you like, but the repeatablity & ease of use quickly sold me on the Edgepro Apex.

The Edge Pro wins hands down. I don't even know where all the pieces are to the razor edge system.

I invested in the APEX and got good results and realized that the Pro Mod would be a better investment. I sold my Stag Trailmaster and have never looked back. I gave the APEX to my father and have been sharpening everything on my Pro Mod. The base is much better and I get even better results.

Get one and you wont be dissappointed.

ART338WM,

I went through exactly what your going through. I spent hours and hours reading everything here and at other forums. I even bought the Razors Edge book, which I think anyone interested in sharpening knives should.

I eventually got the EdgePro Professional model. I am very, very happy I did. I no longer look at different sharpening systems and wonder if I made the right choice or if something else would have been better. The EdgePro Apex or Professional model is held in high regard and I found out why after sharpening my first knife on it.

Ben Dale has sourced a very comprehensive set of sharpening hones and also offers blanks that you can use with PSA wet and dry for experimenting.
Also EZE lap has a 1x6 diamond hone, well actually three, that can be used with each model of Edge Pro.

So no shortage of grit sizes.

Start out with the best.

Most of us started out with stones and then this sharpener and then that and then a Lansky and the crock sticks am\nd on and on.

Simpler to buy an Edge Pro right off.

I guarantee you will save money in the long run and also have the best.

Great thanks to all who replied. I will get the Edge Pro.

What model and stones do you all suggest I buy. I will be sharpening hunting knives with it about 99% of the time.

Would some of you guys please pack up and head out west and put that stinkin' train back on the tracks? I've got a Pro model on the way to Michigan, but I just checked the UPS tracking site and there is a delay due to a train derailment. Oh well... I guess I'll have to keep using my old Razor Edge clamps for a few more days.

How many of y'all have spent enough money on other sharpening solutions to buy one or more Edge Pro Professionals before you finally gave in and bought either a Pro or an Apex?

I could have easily bought one, and perhaps two, though not all of that stuff will sit around collecting dust after the Edge Pro arrives.

Shalom,

I've got both systems (and most all the others, too!) and I agree with the others that the EdgePro wins hands down. No contest.

The Apex model will be fine unless you plan on using it every day.
And the upgrade kit of extra hones is worthwhile.

Remember that everything is available separately and if you want you can get the individual hones when and if you need them.

I am 58 years old and could have bought 3 or 4 Edge pros with the money I have spent on inferior products, systems and hones all these many years.

You will buy knives in the future you regret , but never your Edge Pro.

As a beginner sharpener, I sharpened with the Edge Pro Apex and got very good results. Then I went back and re-read the manual and saw the video again and realize I had good results without even using it quite correctly!!

My very next session saw even better edges. I can't wait until I get good with this thing, then watch out! :)

It really depends on your budget. I have the Professional model and really like it. It (professional model) can handle wider (edge to spine) blades than the Apex, has a beefier base system and can accept the scissor attachment. But both will sharpen equally effectively as they use the same stones and adjustment system.

The Professional model comes with all the stones and a ceramic rod. The Apex folks say to get the upgrade stone kit as it only comes with two different grit stones (180 & 220).

I think they sell 1/2" stones that can handle hawkbills (don't quote me) ....... the stock 1" stones may be a bit wide for that. Recurves should be fine.

He has accessories that are not listed on his web page so don't be afraid to ask. For instance...diamond hones. Ben Dale is not a big fan of diamond hones, but I think he has them and will (if asked) sell you some.

He is a really nice guy and will give you the best info on those two items though. Granted, he's in it to earn a living ..... but he is also very honest and has an excellent reputation here on BladeForums. He'll answer everything honestly and he won't sell you something you can't use.

Man, you are really going to like it and not have buyers remorse if you get one.
