Edge Pro with 1" by 4" diamond plates - would it work?

I can't find 1" by 6" diamond stones that I like for the edge pro. Would 1" by 4" work just fine? This is primarily for 8" kitchen chef knives. I realize the strokes will be shorter but I don't see why it won't work but I better check with you pros here.

Thanks!

I don't think a 1x4 will fit the arm. You could use 2x6 or hack saw a 2x6 into a 1x6 and 0.9x6. Also you could cut 2x3 flex-sharp into 2 piece, peel & tape to a blank.

edit: atoma offers EP diamond plate, quite pricy.

I heard someone used the stones from a dmt aligner and stuck them with some double sided tape on some blanks. He said they worked. Not ideal but they worked.

The arm won't hold the 4" plates without something to make up the extra 2".

If the price difference is enough, it may be worth it.

Don't cut 'em, just use 'em!

DMT 2x6 diamond works.

WOW! Thanks for all the quick responses.

cbwx34, thanks for your photo. A couple of questions if I may:

1. My concern about the 2"x6" diamond plate is the weight. read a number of places that it is too heavy and takes more steel off the edge than necessary. Is that true?

2. And it looks like you don't need any adapter - the edge projust HOLDS the FLAT side of the plate no problem? I'd be afraid that it would pop out and fall down on the knife edge. Is it being held up just by friction?

Thanks,
UL

You can get all 2x6 DMT plates mounted on aluminum plates from Ken (Precise Sharpening). They work perfectly, especially for larger knives. Most guys appreciate the 2" wide surface.

There is no such thing as taking metal off too fast by hand. The faster the better. Atomas are faster, but more expensive.

Do yourself a favor, and just get the right stuff the first time. Fooling around trying to rig something up, when there is already a perfect solution, is pure folly.

If you really want to get cheap (which I don't recommend) you can get the 2 x 6 diamond sharpening plates from harbor freight. They are about $15 and fit the EP as well as the DMT 2 x 6.

But I agree with Grizz, get the right stones the first time so you won't have to buy twice.

JMHO,

CBW, slick, man. Missed that on the first look.

I usually look at your posts a little more carefully.

For a reason. :D
