My GF buys me edge Pro apex with the stones and polishing tape for my Bday :D. Super excited, but then realized what a pain it was to sharpen my bm mini grip sheepsfoot, and about ruined my mini kawiken as the blade would not find a good resting position :thumbdn:. Not to mention the crack I see in the plastic block that moves the sharpening stone..
The blades that do not have much width, seems like you are screwed as you would have to grind from different positions/angles as the hand can move during all this.. The tiny blade just rocks back and forth as the blade barely rests on the base.
I see they make small plate for smaller knives but the free standing blade kinda kills it for me.. Just seems to me this is geared more for bigger kitchen knives and not pocket knives.
Currently I am using my lansky rested on small box and honestly I find it much easier.. Can the edge pro owners shed some light.. I want to like it and can see that can produce results but need something more pocket knife friendly. Will I be better off with different system or is this something I have to get use to and will appreciate over time?
I am thinking about trying out the wicked edge system.

If it has a crack in it contact Ben at Edge Pro they will get you a new one.

As far as small blades go, you will have to rest/stabilize the blade on the grind instead of the flats and adjust the angle accordingly. So on a full flat grind slip joint you will have to make sure the grind is the part resting on the table and not the tang/heel area. Then you sharpen without moving the blade (you only do that on larger knives).

I have owned the edge pro apex, the edge pro Professional, and now the Wicked Edge which i have been using for the past 4 years. I absolutely love my Wicked Edge, but each system has it's own downfalls. Do a lot of research and know the ins and outs before you purchase or you may buy it and then move on to the "next best thing" if you weren't prepared.

Mostly just takes practice, and learn to relax. I know when I first got an EP, I had a tendency to hold the knife with a "death grip", which actually made keeping it steady harder. When I watched one of Ben's videos where he talks about this, it made it much better.

Speaking of videos, if you haven't watched them yet... there's a million tips in them. Also pay attention to how light a touch he keeps on both the knife and the stone handle.

For oddly shaped or small blades I made small cardboard cutouts that help keep the blade steady against the adjustable blade rest. Also, try some magnets under the platform, they'll do a great job of assisting you keep the blade flat against the platform.
