I just bought an apex edge pro. SO far I have only sharpened some kitchen knives to hone my skills before I do a Busse. Man this thing is nice. Inless than five minutes I had a razor edge on knives that have given me trouble in the past. It is a pleasure to see a bevel that is so clean and flat. I almost wish I had bought the pro version but the apex will do just fine for a while. I think that now between my mousepad and sandpaper, my sharpmaker , and the apex, I am ready to go. I must say that I am reluctant to sharpen my Busses but tomorrow I think I will attack a Meaner. Anyway I just wanted to give some kudos to the edge pro. It is a great little gadget with a really clear instructional manual. I say, get one if you can. Now I am considering a little grinding wheel to convex some edges. There sure is lots of stuff to buy. I love steel

Good choice. I have a pro model and love it. It gives just about anyone the ability to put a scary edge on their steel in a short amount of time. I used the 2000 grit sandpaper that came with it to put a mirror edge on a couple of black blades. Impressive to say the least (just something about black/chrome contrast it gives em with that mirror finish). Now that I have showed off a bit to some of the guys, I leave them a little rougher.

I have been considering purchasing an Edge Pro for a while. If you use this on a blade with a convex edge, it takes the convex away correct? If so how do you bring the convex back without messing up the job the Edge Pro did?

I am a total noob to sharpening still.

I picked up an Edge Pro recently as well. I love the thing, very easy to get crazy sharp edges. I started with a kitchen knife, then went right for a Game Warden that I had dulled through use (and found my pad/paper/strop skills lacking). The Edge Pro brought the Game Warden back to life quickly and was simple to use. I still plan on practicing with pad/sandpaper/strop (which will create a conved edge), but the Edge Pro is a great tool to have around.

I agree about the rougher grit. I haven't tried the tape yet but I can see the cutting ability of the kitchen knives when I leavem a little rough. I especially like being able to accurately gauge angles and those water stones really cut!!!!

i also love my edgepro. the only complaint i have is the stones, they wear out quickly and are messy. but a friend and i have solved this quite nicely. we found some metal and shaped/ground it to match the metal backing on the edgepro stones and then bought decent size diamond type stones (dmt i think) and epoxied them onto the new metal backing. these fit perfectly, sharpen at least twice as fast with hardly no mess and no sign of wear.
