Edge retention on Damascus models

Hi,

Trying to convince myself to buy a damascus small 31 with Box Elder inserts. This would be my first Chris Reeve with damascus and I am curious about the edge retention vs. S35VN? This would be a user, no safe queens for me.

Thanks,
Mike

The edge retention on Damascus is the same as S35VN on CRK's. I haven't had any complaints with CRK's sources. Just picked up one with boomerang.

I’m the same way. I personally don’t have any complaints with CRKs Damascus edge retention. Seems to be the same or better than their s35vn. It’s close enough it’s not noticeable. I think on their website they say s35vn holds an edge longer. If it does I can’t tell it

Have used a large 21 dammy just about every day for the past year (food, boxes, rope, plastic strapping, etc.), and all it has needed is stropping.

Do it, you know you want to.

(The raindrop is brand new, the ladder has been used for a year.)

I really think what a person cuts matters much more than the difference between the two steels mentioned. What you cut can wildly vary how long an edge lasts. With the difference in retention between steels so small and all other things being even... Get the one you want!

I would be more worried about how long it keeps looking nice. Luckily, Damascus has become popular around here. There are several threads about how it holds up over time. I'm about 6 months into my lefty basketweave and it still looks very nice. I really like the small marks it has acquired. From most angles it looks rather newish.

We look forward to the unboxing pics and some more once you beat it up just a bit.

They're so close if anything that I find it hard to even tell. And I use mine a lot. It could just be my imagination but I might even say that the damascus seems like it continues to cut longer after dulling because the construction of the steel creates a serration action. It also strops much nicer and I can generally go pretty long without actually sharpening.

Get a Damascus knife, put it in your pocket and cut stuff, It's CRK quality, everything will be OK,
