I am in the process of making a Skinner and need to know the difference in edge retention between S7 and D2.
Assuming they will both be the same RC
Can someone help me out?
Thanks

I believe I would use D2 over the S7. Isn't S7 supposed to be a really tough, low to medium carbon steel used for hammers and stuff like that?

I'd go with the D-2 also. S-7 is a really good steel but don't recall seeing any knives made from it. Are you planning on forging it? If so good luck....

Not planing on forging just stock removal blade.
I know all of the properties except edge retention on the S7 steel.

I have some S7 that I have been working with. While I haven't finished anything to do any testing with, I can tell you the info that I have gathered about it. As far as I have been able to find out from reading and talking to a couple of makers that have used it the edge retention isn't very good. Fine for larger choppers and swords but some people would not be happy with it on a small knife. That being said it should be easy to sharpen. Also I understand that the edge retention does go up a great deal with the use of a cyro cycle after it is tempered. Sorry if these are not great answers but believe me I have done a boat load of research on S7 and there simply isn't alot of info on it. I have a chart on wear resistence from Crucible that I will see if I can find and post. It scored quite low compared to most knife steels but it would be hard to break.
