Edge Retention?

I recently broke down some large cardboard boxes roughly 4 feet by 2 feet by 5 inches with my Spyderco Endura. Before this work it could push cut newsprint nicely, after the work it couldn't really push cut it at all. The edge is at 30 degrees included and it was finished with the white sharpmaker rods. I had to cut the box into fairly small pieces, possibly 15-20 pieces per box. The cutting was a mixture of cutting across the ridges and with the ridges. The edge hadn't chipped. It may have rolled a tad. Is this performance typical?

Edit: The sharpness seems to be coming back fairly quickly on the brown rods.

Pretty typical performance. Cardboard is very abrasive on edges and it sounds like you cut a ton of it. Admirable performance, I love VG10. Spyderco does very well with the heat treat. A Calypso Jr. in ZDP would be a cardboard cutting machine I'd bet. Thin blade, full flat grind, ergonomic handle, and a highly abrasion resistant steel. I need to track one down for a decent price :D

Sounds about right for VG-10. I echo PC356, cardboard is tougher than you think on an edge. The good news is that VG-10 responds well to sharpening, VG-10 is good stuff.

Actually it was only 2 boxes, sorry I didn't make that clear. But still, estimating how much I cut, it was still 40-60 feet.

P.S. here is a ZDP caly, not sure what you mean by "decent price" though.

I agree that VG 10 is good stuff. You can find the Calypso Jr in ZDP 189 at knifeworks for a good price also.
