been using buck knives more and more and was wondering what kind of edge retention I can expect if I use my buck folder for whittling and such.

The edge will hold up fine. It is like all steel, it will need a touch up here and there. I am sure you will not notice it dulling fast.

A good stropping will work as well between heavy uses. I've noticed little chips on the blade when heavy wood cutting. But the chips were very, very small.
