Hello,

I am seeking suggestions on edge angle for my Camillus small boot dagger, and also whether the edge should be toothy or polished.
I have mixed feelings on all this.

Does 440A steel make any difference?
I mean, it's not like I plan to take up whittling as a hobby with this knife.
It's use would be limited (if ever, we hope). Probably only stabbing tests on cardboard and old clothing. So why not a 15 degree/ side angle? If I chip out an edge, or wear the knife out quicker, hey they're pretty inexpensive. That makes sense. I guess....

Well, you might not want to go 15 degrees, because the tip might become too fragile. You wouldn't want a fragile tip, would you ? Well, no, I guess not....

Toothy would be good for punching through clothing, right? I mean a stab is just a micro-slash in a different direction, no?

But wouldn't a polished edge push cut better? I mean, the knife is going to stab, even if its stone dull. Put your care into shearing. And what is shearing but push cutting by another name?

Push cut what you idiot. Were not talking about shearing seasoned hickory here !

...Do I need therapy?

Yes Zippy......... I can diagnose you as a knifeaholic.
A bit confused, but a knifeaholic none the less. :D :D :D

Let us know what you decide to try.

Hello, my name is Zippy, and I'm a knifeaholic :)

Yeah, you got me pegged. Maybe I will get some suggestions
after the holiday? Right now my Lansky is tied up sharpening
the swedge on a Spyderco Perrin. I don't recommend that btw.
Takes too much time for what it's worth. That's why I was taking
suggestions on the small boot knife ahead of time.

Best,
Zippy

And I am definitely a bit confused ! :)

I sharpen a lot of knives on my belt sander, because I am lazy & that is how I did it when I ran a cutlery store years ago. I use 500 to 800 grit belts and it doesn't take too much off. Then I hone them on a power strop. It leaves them shaving sharp.

A belt sander !

I hate you ;)

Btw, after careful study of all relevant data, I have concluded that
20 degrees of toothy edge is ideal for this knife. The fact that I can
touch up the edge on my Sharpsmaker had nothing to do with this
choice :)

Hey Guys...

I just got a Camillus Bootknife...

Pretty nice knife I must say....

Heres a picture of the sheath I made for one of my customers...
I think it turned out pretty nice....

Sheath will have a g-clip installed, however no clip on the sheath in the picture...

Eric- that pic looks like a Kershaw Military Boot Knife, not a Camillus Small boot knife.
