I am making my first knife and have filed the blade and started to sand with 120, but realized that I may have left the edge too thick. It is a little thinner that a penny. It this going to be a problem, should I go back and take more off?

you dont say if its flat ground or hollow ground.....but I would say you need to grind it THIN....... you need some calipers and it needs to be around .020" at the thickest. What material are you using and who is going to heat treat it?

Sorry about the lack of information. It is flat ground, ATS34 and I will be sending it to Texas Knifemakers supply co.

then you can grind it down as thin as you want, within reason....but I would make it THIN!!!!!!

I agree with Tom (Jerry hates it when I do that!). This does depend on size of the stock as well. If it is 1/8" stock, .020 is adequate. If it is 5/32", you are more than likely OK where you are now. Too thin and it will warp. I promise.

Are you the fella I met at TKS one Saturday?

Thanks for the help, I will grind it down a little more and try for .020. Craig, yes we met at tks a few weeks ago, thanks for all the good tips. I think I will have it ready to ht by this weekend. I get about 1-2 hours a night to work on it so it is taking a while. I will put some pics up when it is done... if they are worth showing...
