I've always been an Arkansas stone knife sharpener. My dad taught be how to do it when I was a kid and I'd just always done that way. It's patient work and it will reward you with a shav'n sharp edge after some time and effort.

After buying my LH small Sebenza and not being completely happy with the edge I decided to look into quicker easier alternatives for sharpening that and my other blades. A little research here caused the Edgepro to bubble to the top pretty quickly. I slept on the idea of spending darn near $200 for a knife sharpening system for a couple of weeks. Finally, after looking around my garage and noting that I keep quality tools forever I went ahead and made the leap and ordered the Edgepro.

Do I like it? Darn right I do! I've put a fine edge on my carry knives and shaved a pretty good sized bald spot on my right arm showing off how sharp my blades are now. The neat thing is that the skill and patience level to produce a sharp edge is much lower than that required to do the same by hand with a stone.

I guess this note is a thank-you to this forum and the knowledgeable members here who've contributed and helped guide my decision. Thank you all!

Congratulations! :) Sharpening S30V steel on arkansas stone is a dicey proposition indeed.

Congrats on betting a great tool!

My dad never taught me to freehand, to me it was a life saver after butchering knives freehand for years.

Yeah, but will it be in your pack when you need a fix up in the field? If I were going to sharpen knives for a living I might consider one but for my blades I choose the hands-on approach.

Off-topic, but how often do you guys need to sharpen something "in the field"? My dull knife issues have been of the "hmm, feels kinda dull, I better polish this up when I get home" sort rather than "ohcrap, I better drop everything and sharpen this thing RIGHT NOW" type.

I guess that all depends on how good your steel is and how long you are out.

When I'm "in the field", I carry a dmt diafold red/blue. Works well on *anything*. At home, I like playing with the EP, although I also love my Spyderco ceramics, Norton India, and waterstones. The EP does a great job of laying on a good bevel that I can keep by hand for a long time. It also puts a screaming edge on with very, very minimal effort. Probably the greatest manual sharpener I've ever gotten.

I love my edgpro too. If you want to love it at least 2xs as much convert their stones to some good diamond ones. My buddy and I did both of ours and would never go back.
