Any experiences with the cheap imitation system going for around $60? I've seen pictures (forgot the site selling them) and it looks exactly like the real thing. I'm just curious. And for the record, I do not endorse illegal/immoral rip-offs, imitations, etc.

Are you talking about the DMT Aligner?

I don't think so. The DMT doesn't look exactly like the edge pro. I know on the edge pro website he mentions that there is a rip off found on Ebay that lacks any kind of quality. I just looked and didn't see any though so it must be on another website now.

wow um the edgepro knock offs that the link is selling are about $20 shipped in with 4 stones in china. It seems like it's made for the domestic market here since it came with chinese only instructions and it works fine for the price.

IMO it is of decent quality for the price i paid and works reasonably well i learned on a queen d2 trapper and while it took a long time i got a great edge. I would not pay $90 nor would i pay $60 for one. But it's a darn good sharpener for $20. especially for me given the real edge pro apex is not available in china.

also i looked at that sellers other items nearly everything is stuff that is easily available in china at 20% or less of his asking price. he probably has a relative shipping him stuff from overhere

for example here is his $60 d2 karambit
http://item.taobao.com/auction/item_detail-0db2-5e6584b11884af9f2d252b37cfda3592.htm?cm_cat=0&pm1=1

it sells for about $15 and is definitely not d2 and generally a piece of crap (handled one at a market in another city)

No, not the DMT Aligner. It looks exactly like the Edgepro Apex.

A quick web search turned up a product called CanadaKnives multi-angle sharpener. Prices range from $90-100 wtih two stones. Not much less than the real deal.

You're right, not much less than the real deal, however the seller is in Canada like me. So with the cheaper initial retail price, combined with the savings from cheaper shipping and no import tax/duty, it might be something I'd take my chances on. Overall savings would be significant... until, frustrated with its compromises and resulting pedestrian edges, I toss it in the trash and shell out for the real McCoy. Oh, and there's also the ethical implications to deal with.:o

Now you're talking.

I just got my DMT aligner - $46 with 4 stones (Course, Fine, Extra Fine, Extra Extra Fine) and the serrated knife sharpener rod. That is 4 diamond hones and a diamond cone rod.

I know the DMT is different to the Edgepro, but I'd rather have a genuine DMT than a cheap knockoff of an Edgepro. There is too much chance of crappy construction and low quality grinding surfaces when a lot of effort is made to manufacture something as cheaply as possible. I would rather trust a good quality simpler cheaper system than a low quality more complex system. If you can't afford an Edgepro then don't buy a cheap knockoff pretending to be an Edgepro - better to go with a genuine DMT Aligner or genuine Sharpmaker.

I think that may be a real EdgePro on the CanadaKnives.com Site. At the bottom of the page it says,
"Includes coarse, medium, and fine honing , a multi-angle knife clamp. The (sic) From a Estate Sale that had a lot of hunting and fishing supplies."

Sounds like they bought someone's old inventory. That would explain why it looks identical to the real item :)

That doesn't explain why they gave it a different name, though. Try calling and asking.

I haven't checked the Canadian site but Ben Dale does have a disclaimer on his EdgePro web page mentioning a knock-off being offered by a Canadian vendor. (fwiw)

Yeah, I remember reading about some Canadian vendor selling knockoffs and I know Ben's got that thing on his site about it. Get a real EP. Don't support those asshats.

What link? I would like to get one, if you still have it, can you PM me the link?
Thank you.

I wish you could buy the edge pro with diamond stones. I would buy it in a heartbeat if it came with them
