Here shortly I'm about to obtain an EDI Genesis I knife. Anybody care to share some opinions on these knives whether it would be the EDI Genesis I or II. How did they cut and perform? Is the lock up solid or did it have a lot of blade play? Do they make for an excellent edc knife? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I was going to add one to the collection awhile back. I really liked the look of the EDI Genesis I. However, I remember reading on the forums that the lock not all that great. You may want to do a "search" on the forums and see what comes up.

The EDI Genesis is/was a great knife. With better marketing, I think they would still be around today. Their slim profile and the great materials used in construction made them a low end favorite of mine. They are/were fully competitive with Benchmade and Spyderco and had some uniqueness those two major brands didn't have.

I have a Genesis I. It performs well and I have never had the lock fail on me, even during spine whack tests. That's all I know. Some may have different experiences regarding this knife.

The problem with the Genesis was not marketing, it was QC.
EDI parts came from a variety of sub-vendors and the return rate was very high. If you got a good one, you got a great knife. If you ghot a bad one it was usually very bad.

EDI had great distribution, good marketing materials and Good people working there.

They didn't know how to efficiently produce the great designs they owned, and their insistence on doing it the hard way put the company under.

The Genesis II was a cost reduced version of the Genesis I. The II did not have liners on both sides and the clip could not be swapped to the left side. Get the Genesis I model. I have a new one I could probably be talked out of. It is quite solid now, but since I haven't used it I have no idea how it would wear over time. - Lee

The Gen I is still, by today's standards, a great knife. The quality surpases BM. The action is smooth and the way the ball detent holds the blade makes the thing fly open with a flick of the thumb. The lock-up is great even though there is a slight bit of blade play. IMHO the Gen I has the best designed clip on any knife I own.

The Genesis l& ll have one of the best deep pocket clips every designed. I wish other high end folder used their design . It's very low profile. It sucks that they went out of business. On the negative side if something goes wrong with the knife or you get a lemon there's no where to turn as far as I know.
Good Luck:D

I bought one when they came out, after reading a positive review by Dex. I had it for about a year, then the liner lock failed and I sent it in for a replacement. The second one's fit and finish was not eqal to the first. The deep pocket carry was nice and the hand ergos was personally great for me. But, as a few have already said, the fact that they are out of business makes it hard to buy one with any level of confidence.

My EDI Genesis II has been in my pocket for a few months. In truth the knife is one of my faves. Bronze washers/bushings and tweaking the torks screw make it tight and next to no play. I typically like a little bit of tension on the pivot. In my opinion flicking folders open all the time reduces there usable life by bashing the stop pin. Comparing the liner to an older Emmerson's liner proved to be a pleasant suprise. The liner on the EDI was every bit as thick as the Emmerson and thicker than a BM AFCK. Oh and the liner is titanium too. All in all this is a great user knife. I like many others found that not all ATS-34 blades are created equal. On that note the EDI's heat treating is okay after cutting natural and synthetic fibre ropes, cardboard, tie wraps, etc... the blade still has bite and hasn't been shapened yet. The frosty bead blast finnish is adopting some character from wear. I like blades a little thicker like maybe .125" and up. The EDI is .115" but has proven it's self time after time with it's slicing abilities. In my opinion it is better with slicing chores than the Emmerson CQC-7, BM AFCK and the verdict isn't in yet for the REKAT Carnivore. The handle is comfy enough but there is something about plastic that seems to lower my confidence in a knife. That is just my hang up though and with use I am getting over it. The knife sits deep in the pocket and has a good shape when folded. It doesn't catch anything comming out of the pocket, considering the size of the thing and how deep it sits in the pocket my first though would be that it would "walk" it's way out of me pocket when riding my bike. Not so, it stays put and dosn't cause any discomfort like say a full size REKAT Carnivore (mild). Some knives have liners that are easy to inadvertantly unlock, so far the EDI has not shown this trait. The EDI Genesis is a good buy over all, I think if I were to buy a replacement for it I would buy the Genesis I with the G 10 scales.

So I did OK buying this knife htat I have never heard of? I was at a gun show last weekend and the was a knife that I have never seen before, I saked to see it noticing the smoothness, washers, low pocket clip, ats-34 steel black coated priced $125 marked down to $75 markeddown to $37.50 and i told the Lady I would give her $35 for it. I do not know what type of handles it has, probably FRN but it seems to be a good knife and a steal at that price. Does anyone have a link to thier website so i can get the details. Thanks in adance.

EDI does not exist anymore. Look at the date on the previous post.

Handle is G10.

The Genesis is a good knife.

I recall reading somewhere online in 2005 that EDI was on the way back in business. I was unable to find anything to confirm this though. I sent knife writer Dexter Ewing (he used to be a moderator here too), an e-mail message and he said that he had seen a bunch of EDI models on a booth table at the 2005 Blade show and that they had most likely been bought out by another company. But he too confirmed that nothing had come of the new EDI so far.

I've had the Genesis II since the day it came out-loved it ever since
had the Genesis I-lost it up in Alaska in 2000 :(

Genesis-I is G10, Genesis-II is Zytel. They are great knives, but I did have to send mine back to fix the lock. Too bad they've been gone for years ...

I bought one when they first came out. I never had a problem and thought they were fine knives. I left it on the desk of my last job when I left years back. Man that still bothers me, after probably 6 years and 100's of knives later. Live and learn I guess.

I spoke with a gentleman at a Gun Show here in St. Louis that purchased the remaining stock and the copyrights of EDI. He is assembling the Genesis model in small batches. He said he is attempting to ressurect the company, and is working on new designs.

Interesting. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a plain edge Genesis I or II. I have a Genesis I with a black serrated balde. It was my favorite daily carry for a few years. Of all my folders, the Genesis I has the deepest-carrying pocket clip. For a larger folder, it carries very well.

I have an EDI Genesis I. I also have the Benchmade equivalent, the AFCK. In my opinion, the Benchmade is vastly superior.

The clip on the EDI is very soft and bends quite easily.

The blade lock-up is okay, but if you swing the knife, you can feel the liners and G-10 handle flex.

In my opinion, the handle feels too light.

Also, I just don't like thumbstuds.

Unless you're getting a good deal on the EDI, I would recommend looking into a Benchmade AFCK.
