i just wondered, the protective coat of some knives, if not of al of em wears off with use.

more with hard use, than normal use probably

like i got a black coated carbon steel thrower, the point is showing way more steel than when i bought it.

so now if it wears off, it probably also wears of with knives u use in food preparation if they got it

so wudnt that be toxic and quite unhealthy?

Most knives used for food preparation are not coated, and if they are, the coating is normally something used specifically with food preparation in mind. Either way, the amount of wear that a coating would exhibit when used exclusively for food preparation is extremely minimal, so I wouldn't be concerned about any potential health effects.

yeah, i wudnt think it'll be a real concern, but i wondered anyway

but its not like i only use knives made for food preparation in food preparation

That may be, but I'd probably limit that to occasional usage. If you're doing a lot of food prep, I'd suggest picking up a few dedicated food prep knives. Old Hickory is a great inexpensive option, and there are no coatings to be concerned with - just good ol' carbon steel and wood.

I think it depends on whether it's wearing off or chipping off. If it's wearing off then it's doing it only when there's enough pressure on it to cause wear. If it's coming off in flakes, then that's somrthing entirely different.

P.S. I originally clicked on your post because I thought you had discovered a jacket I could snack on.

i got one whos coming off in flakes, i'm not really using it, but yeah might not be too healthy to do so

Ha! Me too:D

Oh and I wouldn't worry about the coating coming off in food. I always like a little extra pepper anyways.;)

If it is coming off in flakes, that would likely make it a paint coating as opposed to an oxide coating or some teflon or nitride coating.

Most such paint coatings are epoxies. The black color is from carbon black. Probably has some calcium carbonate or silica (ground sand) as an extender pigment. Once cured the epoxy resin itself is non-reactive.

Ach, a little won't hurt you.

If it were coming off in flakes from one of my knives I would take some steel wool and get the rest off then if I wanted a black blade I would treat it with a black oxide forming treatment as opposed to paint. But YMMV, the paint should not hurt you.
