I've never had any experience with damascus blades, but one particular small seb w/ a carbon fiber scale in the for sale section has be curious. (Hi!)

Anyway, all of my gear / guns are users. Does anyone actually use a damascus knife, or will the beauty of the blade be ruined in short order? What are the special considerations in care / sharpening? Can the blade be rehabbed from a user state?

Thanks!

Hi,
It'll hold a great edge and will look good for quite a while, eventually the black will start to wear and you'll find the unetched blade starting to show, similar to a DLC coat wearing but tougher.
I've never done it but I've read about guys re etching their own blade with pherric chloride ( if I remember correctly ), you'll probably find a lot of material on it in the other makers sub section of the forum. I thought that I'd try it with one of mine but they never wore to that point and I eventually sold them, plus I figured that it'd be easier and possibly cheaper to send them in to the spa if they ever needed it.

If say get it and if it wears it'll just look sweet, if it bugs you I think that you'll have options when it comes to etching it.

I'm looking forward to some pics of honestly worn Damascus :D

I have had a couple CRK with Devin Thomas Stainless Damascus Blades. I have used them quite heavily for edc and none of them showed any wear after cutting tons of cardboard, whittling, and other edc duties. I found it easy to sharpen and held a pretty good edge and to me, felt it was basically just a fancy S30V as it performed just like it. I really did nothing with it that I would not do with my other sebenza's and mnandi's.............For a EDC user though, I would definitely go with the Stainless Damascus as the High Carbon Damascus is more prone to rust as they have to put a varnish like coating on it to help keep it from doing so, this came from Devin Thomas themselves. So when looking, I only look for SS Damascus. The HC will have more exotic patterns, but personally, they are more of the safe queen type, where as the SS os more for the User. Both are beautiful and you will read here that people edc the HC with no issues, I am just going by what I was told by DT himself when I emailed them years ago inquiring about their damascus and the differences. I dont believe that DT even makes HC Damascus anymore though, so all the recent sebenza's will definitely have the SS Damascus blades.

And the old adage when people question anything about CRK, I always tell myself, if its good enough for Chris Reeve, its good enough for me.

So either way, wether HC or SS, you will be getting the highest quality out there.
