Hi guys,
I want to by a slipjoint but am overwhelmed by all the different kinds! I don't know where to start. I know I want something with nickel silver bolsters, in stag/bone or a nice hardwood with 2-3 blades. Can someone please post pictures of a few common patterns like that? I sure would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

There are quite a few picture threads on this sub-forum on what people carry. I would start out by looking in there. Also, this site is a plethora of information, you learn something new here all the time.

There are dozens of patterns and handle styles, but these are a few popular patterns in Case knives that get mentioned frequently.

Case Yellow Synthetic Medium Stockman

Case Amber Bone Texas Jack

Case Sambar Stag Peanut

I've seen very few complaints if someone selects one of these pocket knives.

though not as high-end as you are probably thinking, my chinese buck stockman at about 4 inches closed is a stout knife that will tell you if you like the pattern at all and should invest in a higher grade.

when i lost my favorite knife this was the first thing that landed in my pocket, as an "until" knife-until i replaced the one i lost with another that i liked as much. its been a few months and the buck hasn't gone anywhere.

nickle silver bolsters, brass liners, stainless blades (that have been behaving very well for me), good simple wood handles (looks like some kind of laminate). a good test knife that is good enough quality to pass onto someone if you don't like it or replace it. just some food for thought...

A place to start perhaps, you can browse the current Case knives by pattern here:

Keep in mind that not all of the knives in each section will be identical in design. For instance, some of the Stockman knives have squared bolsters and some are round.

The link to Case is a good place to start. Here's a link to one of my favorite places to roam around - they've got a lot of older brands, newer remakes, and just plain ol' cool stuff: four blade Stockman patterns, "Dead Skunk" handle designs (look up the song by Loudon Wainwright), Wildcat Driller patterns, and other interesting stuff.

Buy anything from Case and you won't be far wrong.

I like the Mini-Trapper, Med. Stockman and the Slimline Trapper for urban carry.

Add an SAK Cadet to it and you're good to go.

There's alot of variables here that will affect what kind of knife you will find comfortable to carry.

What kind of clothes do you wear most of the time?

What kind of environment do you work and play in?

What kind of cutting jobs do you run across in your normal day?

Usually a 3 1/2 to 4 inch overall knife length is comfortable in jeans, but a little bulky in Dockers, let alone dress pants. A 3 1/2 stockman with square bolsters will be a bit more noticable in the pocket than say a 3 1/2 inch barlow, with a slimmer cross section and only two blades instead of three. But a 4 inch single blade trapper or famers knife will carry in a pocket easier than a 3 1/2 inch stockman.

Try alot of different patterns and see what suits you personally. With traditinal pocket knives there's so many diffferent ones out there, it's like being in a 31 flavor ice cream store. Some people like rocky road, some like mint chocolate chip, some like plain old vanilla. Everyone here has been through many patterns in thier life. Also the older you get, your tastes will change with the years. I used to carry an almost 5 inch sodbuster, now I love a 3 1/2 inch scout knife like I carried as a kid. Came a full circle. I also like the smaller knives as well these days, like a peanut. Peanuts are fun knives to collect, lots of variance and handier than you would think from thier small size.

Maybe try something in the middle of the road to start off with. Maybe a 3 7/8 stockman, or regular size barlow. If they seem a bit too small after a while, try something bigger. If they work out, fine.

Good luck.

Hi,

Because there are so many different patterns, I'm going to recommend looking at Rough Riders. I know they are China made, but they make a ton of patterns, they are good users as a rule, and they are pretty darn cheap.

This way you could inexpensively try any pattern that strikes your fancy and if you don't like it, give it away or even toss it. Then once you find a pattern or two or three you like, replace them with something really nice that you like.

Geez Bob W., I wish you hadn't posted that link to those Case Patterns!:)

Here's another big tip, so get your credit card out: enter CV in that site's search box...

One more: if you visit the showroom in Missouri, they have a large display case of knives with super-duper closeout prices. :)
