Education needed on Whetstones

I've never heard of Kai stones, and I don't know how much "R995.00" is. I can tell you that the King 1k/6k is a very good stone that many people think highly of. It's right at $40 including shipping from Japan Woodworker.

You will want a coarser stone for re-profiling or fixing a damaged edge, but the King 1k/6k will take a dull knife to shaving sharp pretty efficiently. I would recommend a DMT 8"x3" Extra Coarse Diasharp (220grit) for the heavy work, and it will work great for lapping the water stones too. The DMT costs about $45 plus shipping from Knifecenter.

IT is about 129.892 USD for the stones at full retail here. I guess I will look into something different. Currently I have up to fine ceramic sharpener and really want to go a bit further so I am interested to know what grit is the ceramic equal to in whetstones so I know what to go for to get a finer edge. Or maybe look into spydercos, ultra fine ceramic stones?

I have to say - I bought a set of three stones - 800 - 1200 - 6000 with a stand.

Handles all of my sharpening needs (convex, double bevel, and scandi) as well as other things (wood working tools and the like). They are an investment - but they are VERY nice.

If you want quality stones, from 120 grit to 30,000 grit, just remember to buy Naniwa and Shapton.:thumbup:
