Here's some crappy pics of my AK-47 stripped naked for your enjoyment. Some may think it is an abomination, but I like it better now, and it is now real sharp after some reprofiling. I had previously beat up the coating pretty good, too. A freakin nice sapling slasher and bush wacker.
I also used it the other night to cut the phone book a few times in response to a question Cliff asked in another thread - I said in another post that I could cut easiest through the phone book with a 1000 grit edge, and Cliff questioned me on it, so I did a very unscientific test using one knife with a polished edge (AK-47) and one with a 1000 grit edge (MMHW DV8). The polished edge made the cut much easier in my little test, so Cliff was right to question my comment.
In answer to Cliff I'll elaborate. I use a slight rocking motion. It takes a little while (30 seconds or more). How much rock is needed to get the blade going depends on how sharp it is. Not much rocking is needed on my best cuts, and I find I'll usually rock pretty good and push pretty hard before admitting defeat.
The 1000 knife has a full flat grind versus the newly stripped and polished Busse Ak-47's saber grind, so it should have the advantage. The one cut I made with the 1000 grit edge was difficult. I got easier cuts with two sections of the AK-47 (still got work to do in one section). I did second cuts with the AK-47, also. The second cut was a bit more difficult than the first. I'm going to do some work on the 1000 grit edge and try again sometime. I don't know what cutting through a phone book proves, either, but it is a neat exercise inspired by some oleyfermo (Mr. Jimmy Fikes) posts. I'm sure I still got a LOT of work to do to get to his level of sharpness!
I almost got my finger on the first push with the polished AK-47 - I was using effort similar to what I used with the 1000 grit edge and it popped through a good half inch of pages with my finger too close for comfort.
That ain't a Chicago phone book there, either - like an inch or so thick. Look closely and you'll see I've had some failures.
