I have never truely trained in any of the filipino combat arts however i have gotten a mixed bag of comments regarding the effectiveness of filipino combat arts from people i know, everything from "it is BS" to "its the most effective edge training." I truely respect ALL fighting arts and want to study filipino arts. Are they considered to be the top notch of edge weapon training?

Whatever its shortcomings, there really isn't anything better out there for a foundation in bladed combat skills. For knife fighting, I rely on Fairbairn CQC empty-hand concepts with a knife in my hand. For large blade, your only alternatives are western fencing, and Japanese kenjutsu, both of which are embodied in a very lively fashion in the canon of FMA. And of course, the shortcomings most often named in FMA also exist in western fencing and Asian sword arts schools as well. Like all martial arts, it is up to the practitioner to train as realisticly as possible, use what works, and discard what does not.

Yeah, what Steve said. There is no more effective weapons art out there, look at all of the top knife instructors, and how they studied FMA.--Joe

who are considered the top knife instructors? I come from a Jiu-jitsu / boxing background so this type of training is all togather different to me.

There are a number of very well known ones who travel the country teaching seminars. You cannot really learn to fight that way. The content is usually geared toward what will create a feeling of fun for the money in the paying clientelle.

You never know where you are going to find good instruction. One of the best knife instructors I have heard of is a Jujitsu and San Shao guy who is a former SF operator from the Viet Nam era. For long knife or short sword/machete, Serrada is an excellent foundation. Look for FMA teachers in your area. Try to find someone who is more interested in teaching stuff that you can do at full speed.

Almost all of my instructors have been of the artsy variety, but what they taught me was invaluable. I just had to go out and fight(practice fighting of course) with it to learn what I could use, and what I could not.

I agree completely ... it doesn't matter who are the top knife instructors. What matters is, who do you have to choose from in your area? Doing twice-yearly seminars with the top instructors won't get you very far, whereas training twice weekly with a good local instructor will. Give us a list of who is around you and what they teach, and we'll pipe up if we've heard of the instructor or system.
