Effects Of Squaring Spine

Hi,
I want to remove the coating and sharpen or square the spine to 90 degrees of my tops pathfinder knife to allow it to work with a firesteel and flint. I heard doing this could temper the knife. Is that during the process of squaring the spine and people overheating the blade while grinding it or is it the shape of the knife after when is being used? I would like to know from someone who has done this and knows about the effects of it.

Thanks.

Just don't let it get too hot to touch and you'll be fine. Periodically dip it in water while you're working.

For what you want to do (squaring a spot on the spine), it should not even get hot. It only takes a second or 2. I have done this on many of my blades with my Dremel tool & little sanding drum. You will be fine. If you are that worried, do as archieblue said & dunk/spray it with water to keep it cool.

Thanks. I was worried the knife would get hot while being used if the spine was squared. But it looks like it doesn't have an effect.

I got the knife today and I like it but the handle is uncomfortable for my hand size. I'm trying to find a way to fix this.
