In this video they talk a little bit about the Egyptian battle axe. They actually make one and test it out n a helmet. It looks like a tomahawk to me. What do you guys think?

Ed,

The shape reminds of an enlarged adze. It certainly have that African feel. At least most of the African war axe looked that way.

Speaking of tribal axe, a good buddy of mine,Hung shown us a Hmong Axe from Vietnam (he's a forumite here as well)
Sharing here is an axe of mine, made by ethnic people in the central highlands of Vietnam. The blade is not fully tucked in the handle yet, still removable. The handle is made from a branch and a trunk of a kind of tree which is said to be very elastic. The tree handle was inserted in a bamboo tube. The bamboo part is carved with ethnic pattern. I assume this one a ladies’ axe for daily light chopping work.

Think someday in the future anthropologists will be looking at a Winkler-Sayoc Hawk in the same way? Post Zombie apocalypse, the "survivors" will contribute their success to the Winkler-Sayoc. Future Pharaohs will steal the design and claim it came from the God Sayoc, and was forged in the fabled land North of Carolina.

Oh, cool video Ed, thanks for sharing.

Well I guess Mr. Winkler will be seen as some sort of legendary master craftsmen. Check out this picture montage of his shop. It incredible to think that the axe I carry with me when I’m out came from such a beautiful place and from such a talented man.

I've seen that, he does have a very cool shop. The song is funny, appropriate for his location, but a bit soft for fighting tools.

DAMIT Brother Edwood, now I have more new stuff I HAVE to make. I need another life to make things I've seen in this one.
Thanks for the vid, very interesting techniques, gotta try one. These ancient makers are amazing
.... And also congrats on winning the Zombie contest on TEOTWAWKI. http://teotwawkiblog.blogspot.com/
Lot of good reading there.........Randy

A couple weeks ago I ran across this old (1854) book that talked about weapons of ancient Egypt, so I bookmarked it for a thread like this.

from "A popular account of the ancient Egyptians: illustrated with five hundred woodcuts", Volume 1 (Google eBook)
by Sir John Gardner Wilkinson, 1854

Wow. now THAT is traditional. It's basically a palstave type axe from really ancient times. The Hmong version looks a lot more vicious though.

Hey Ed if you want to see something cool, look up some of the early battle axes from ancient Mesopotamia. They very much resemble tomahawks and were probably used much the same way.
