The shorter blade is shaped to mimic the look of the bigger model. That is sad as it sacrifices batoning space.
I also think that the thumb serrations are too big, i like them shallower.
Apart from that, it is surely a great knife and one of the best buys in the category.
The blade shortening was due to recent German laws, too.
You don´t have to "explain" fixed blades under 4.75 inches.
The modified (!) D2 is very good and the knives are well made. They can´t be cheap due to high cost Solingen production.
You have to like the new grips. Check before you buy.
For me, the design works better in full size and I had the big GEK for a few months.
