Anybody have any experience with the knives of Eight Dollar Mountain Forge? These are usually big knives and have aluminum cast handles.

A few years ago (I think I was probably around 15, so perhaps 2-3), there was an article about the place. I believe the maker's name is Dale Sandberg, but, as I said, it was a long time ago, so I'm not 100% sure. All of the knives are $100 or less, and are reportedly very well made. Eight Dollar Mountain is where he lives (and works), so that's how it got its name. Anyone have any experience with him?

I have 1 of his Smatchets with the Colonel Applegate designed handle and although it's not the prettiest blade I've ever bought it holds it's own in the cutting! Probably the best bang for your buck if you're looking for inexpensive hard use blades. Dale makes his knives from L6 and casts the handles dirrectly onto the tang.Hope this helps

I, too have one of their Smatchets. My favorite large blade, next to a good khukuri.
It is not world class for looks, but it is a hell of a cutter and chopper.

I have one of Dale`s 12" bladed Trench Bowies ,with the spiked knuckle D guard. I`ve used it pretty hard and it`s held up great. It holds an edge very well and it`s a great chopper. The blade is 3/16" thick but pretty broad so it`s still strong and has some weight to it. It`s also thin enough to work well on soft wood and brush. It`s an excellent knife for the money IMO.
