You wanted to know the difference between the 20" AK and the GRS.

As you can see the Both are big heavy knives ment for serious chopping. Either one would handle just about anything you could ever want it to do.:D

The GRS:

The AK

But remember though these are heavy knives over 3 pounds and for cutting trees down you might be better off with a 18" AK or GRS.

Unless you are very strong as they can get very heavy very quickly. ;)

The monsters will keep up with an axe splitting wood. :D

I have 15", 18" and 20" AKs and I can tell you that the 20" AK is A lot BIGGER than the 18" AK. It's not just the lengh either the whole knife is bigger.

They are dedicated choppers. Either is too much for me these days but if you're a big, young, strong kid (from my perspective anybody under 50 is a kid) they work fine.

Thanks for starting this thread Ankerson. I only have pictures to look at from here so feedback from forumites is very helpful thank you. The AK and GRS are truly good looking. I like them both.

I am of average height and build so I am not one of the big strong brutes, but I am used to physical work so I think I can manage something a bit heavy. At least when swinging the 25 Kobra for full working days I felt I could use something longer and heavier. A friend of mine has a really big one that he bought in Khatmandu, and I am very comfortable with that one. It is longer and heavier than the 25 Kobra. It looks like a fat 30 inch Sirupati or something.

So after some thought I have started believing that not only weight is good but also lenght. And the 30 inch Sirupati is both heavy and long. It is also cheaper on Uncle Bill than the choppers first suggested and that makes me feel a whole lot better.

One question though. Is the handle on the 30 Sirupati of the same length as on the 25 Kobra? I reckon it isn't cause I assume anyone would need to use a double handed grip on that long thing from time to time, at least I would.

And Uncle Bill, I am 28 years old. I expect to be called a kid. :D

The 30" Sirupati is very heavy. Though it has sufficient handle length to be held in both of my smaller hands, it's a monster. My only use for it is to swing in figure eights in front of me and let the pull from it's weight pop my back into place as if I were hanging upside down holding dumb-bells to stretch my vertebrae back into line.

A heavier 20" or 22" Sirupati would be far more appropriate to your skill level or a 20" Ang Khola. Slow down and let the blade dynamics do the work for you instead of forcing or pushing it as if it were something other than a khukuri.

Warning: I have a feeling you are not flowing in harmony with the khukuri - fighting it, forcing it. SLOW DOWN and feel when you swing correctly to hit the sweet spot. The power will come later with more practice. Look at the safety threads and the wounds suffered.

If you want to be known as Peg-leg Eric, then continue your chopping as before.

I have to agree with Rusty on this, a 20" or 22" Sirupati might be what you are looking for. Long and heavy enough to do the job, but not too heavy or too thin.

When you get past 25" you have a sword, not a knife so for heavy cutting I would stick with 25" or under.

He has another good point. :D

Rusty and Ankerson

I have e-mailed with Uncle Bill now and it is going to be the 20 inch Ang Khola I think. I'll get the 30 inch Siru later as a special order with a double handle.

Thanks for good thinking and advices. I certainly don't want to end up as one-legged-Eirik. I place a lot of weight on you guys' words here because I know you have a lot more experience than me. And I understand that I am in the "young and wild" category even though it doesn't seem so from where I am standing. So I need someone to hold me back by my shirt's neck some times, thanks.

The heavyness of the 30 Sirupati is ok for me I believe. My friend's big fat Khatmandu market khukuri is even bigger and it fits me very well. The strangest thing is that the biggie really did give me the feeling of "flowing in harmony" as you describe it. The 25 Kobra did not. Using the biggie was completely effortless and a joy to use. And after what I have been reading here on this forum some times there is a correct khukuri waiting for everyone, all depending on the person. So I was just thinking that a biggie might be right for me. But it is on for later now.

You get two small hands on the 30 inch Siru. Sounds like the handle is a bit too small for me. What is the length of the handle in centimeters or inches?

Yes.:D

Let the knife do the work, don't force the knife. ;)

We'll be getting a 20 inch AK into the air as soon as Eik lets me know whether to ship direct to him or his Mom.
