eki deployment trick

To fix the slow deployment on my cqc 8 (still fairly new) I added the thin white washers from my RAT 1.... I believe they are teflon... So just a small trick I guess.... Has anyone else had similar problems? In order to get good deployment when using the thumb discs I would have to sacrifice blade play, and that defeats the purpose of a hard use knife. This fixed that issue

so you have teflon washers with the nylatron ones in there as well? you had blade play with just the nylatron washers by themselves?

There was slight play when I tried to ease up on the pivot screw... Nothing major.... How about those beers bro lol

And yes the paper thin teflon washers are sitting on the nylatron touching the blade. I guess it helps smooth it out

Yea, i gotta clean up my workspace in the garage, then we can sharpen knives while we drink!

I have something strange going on with my CQC7's, a 7V and a 7B. Both are solid, excellent lockup and smooth action when opening. When they are closed though, the 7V is still solid with little to no blade wiggle, but the 7B feels loose in the handle and you can push it to one side and touch the liner. I know it doesn't affect the performance in any way, but it just seems odd.

How long have you had the 8, OP? I know that with almost all of my Emersons the initial taking them apart and cleaning them wasn't enough to really get them buttery smooth, and free moving. After about 6 months of regular carry, and a LOT of opening and closing, the pivot action on all of them seems to really loosen up, to the point where I can flick them opened without any real wrist movement, while still having the pivot tightened well down, with ZERO horizontal play. I also have started using a very small amount of flourinated grease between the washers and the liners they touch (the washers seem to move with the blade, so no lube is needed between the washer and the blade, just the washer and the liner) which has made a good deal of difference as far as keeping the pivot action super smooth. I know that the nylatron washers are "self-lubricating" but that doesn't seem to be enough to make them sufficiently smooth for my obsessive compulsive knife knuttery, so CRK grease has fixed that. Just my observations carrying EKI knives heavily over the last year or so.

Gooey that might be normal because my 8 does the same BUT my 15 doesn't.... And Doc I haven't had the 8 for longer then 2 weeks but its been a solid 2 weeks of opening and closing, it actually had a bit of a squeak.

FWIW, my break-in procedure only takes a week at the most. First of all, I leave the factory lube in place while obsessively opening and closing the knife for a couple of days. The factory lube seems to act like an abrasive, that helps to seat the blade and the washers. After a couple of days, I clean the pivot without taking the knife apart, by using Benchmade's Blue Lube Cleaner, which floats the grit out along with dissolving any remaining lube. After a day of opening and closing, I add a small amount of Blue Lube lubricant to the pivot and all is right with the world. :)

I do something somewhat similar. I basically just over lube it with oil without taking it apart or cleaning the the factory lube and leave it, open and close it etc. Over lubed it again, takes a few times but than it gets there. does not take more than few days.

I polished the liners a tad. 800, 1000, 2000, 2500 and theyre pretty smooth. The steel came out better than the titanium side but the action is very smooth now. I used loc tite and tightened just tight enough for no blade play and left it to dry. Its still a bit stiff but its 3 days old. Very easy deployment from pocket and a nice tight but smooth thumb disc opening. I love it.

The common denominator is to use the bejeebus out of a new Emerson and it will fall in line.

Yea I have been opening and closing it like crazy all weekend and it did get better. I only polished the liners cause they looked so rough. I hsd the option of the display which was well broken in or a new one in box. I chose the new one cause I like to break stuff in.
