I just finished this one up. The blade is 1084 and the hardware is stainless. The handle is Stellar (or Steller's)Seacow bone. The inlaid escutcheon is gold lip mother-of-pearl.

Too much danged work on this seacow bone. I won't be taking any orders for these. :D

Great looking knife, Terry. I have been thinking about getting a knife with a stellar seacow bone handle. Could you let us know what you mean by too much work?

It's porous and takes a lot of filling and finishing time. I also wasted a bunch of time trying to slice it and cut it up freehand on my cheap bandsaw (it was a big piece).

A lot more time was spent making the slot for the tang. This one is not a mortised tang. Since I make slim handles and usually a fairly substantial tang, I can't just bore a big hole in it. I wouldn't do that anyway -- to much slop for me. So I started with a 3/16" hole and worked at it for probably two or three hours with a chainsaw file, making umpteen dry fits until everything flushed up nicely.

However, on the bright side, John Perry called me last night and while we were talking I asked him to make me a custom handle broach for reaming out slots. Part of my problem is having an ill equipped shop. I spend so much time with handwork that it probably takes me three to five times as long to make a knife as the other full-timers I know.

Terry,

Great knife and I know what you mean on the hand work. You will be very happy with one of John's tools, they are excellent and every bit as nice as his knives which is very high praise indeed.

The knife sort of jumps right at you and hogs your attention.

Very nice and elegant. :)

Gol Dangit, and I was gonna call you and change my bowie order to Sea Cow Bone! :D

Seriously, I do love the look of that Sea Cow Bone on this one. Your knives keep on gettin better. Everytime I see one of your new pics, I want the knife.

Terry, you've always done all the amazing jobs! This Stellar Sea Cow bone coordinated with gold lip mother-of-pearl inlaid escutcheon really makes the best combination. By the way, have you considered to apply some other animal bone material: stag or sheep horn on El Camino like usual? That also makes them a perfect pair.

One silly question, the handle looks shorter than standard El Camino's. Is it related about the weight balance issue of this new bone material?
