I do not usually purchase sight unseen, however I recently did so on two separate occassions. I purchased a box elder and a lignum vitae. My first CRK was a box elder and it has always been one of my favorites.
I have heard so much about the lignum and I decided to purchase one knowing that I could return it if I did not like the pattern. I have seen in numerous posts that CRK discontinued this wood but I have rececently seen them available from two separate dealers. The birth date on this one is 7/30/12 and it has the new clip and new thumb nick. Although not very evident in my photo, the wood has already started to get a slight greenish tint. The pattern and feel of the wood are very similar to my Ziricote, although the lignum has lighter colors.
I am happy with the box elder but still trying to decide if I should keep the lignum vitae. More than likely I will end up keeping it though.

The story of the ugly duckling comes to mind, I bet the change in colors will shock you one day. Congrats on your awesome scores.

Personally........... if it were me...... I'd ditch the Lignum for a Honduran Rosewood or Snakewood. Box Elder is one of my favorites.

I have come close to ordering a Honduran Rosewood and very well might order one. I am still deciding whether to keep the Lignum though.

I think the Lignum will change for the better with some time and use. Give it a bit of a go and think on it some more after you've carried it.

Both are beauts, congrats.

If it were mine... it would stay! Very nice & special wood, that Lignum Vitae!

The box elder is very nice also.

Kind regards,

Jos

I have decided to keep both. The Honduran Rosewood has been tempting me and I could not resist any longer; it should be here within the next few days. Hopefully these will hold me over for a while.

Good for you! I have a feeling that the lignum is going to be a real looker in time. Keep it in the light, give it some air and I think you are in for a very pleasant surprise! Contrats. Two of my favorite woods!

I received the honduran rosewood yesterday. A picture of the elder, lignum and honduran rosewood together.
